Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...That none have seen but we alone.

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

A man who wants so desperately to be President, should never be President.

"Bill must be Sauron..."

Eeewwww!--that's even creepier than Peter Jackson's version of Shelob :)

It would've been cool to remember the first moon landing. I wasn't even born then. What was hearing Nixon's resignation like?

"I found myself wondering if Bill was recognizing the opposite of himself."

Interesting take. Bill was the Anti-Reagan! :)

I was barely 16. I cried.

"Morgoth is someone in the past... some great evil... Teddy Kennedy?"

I was about to take a bite of my lunch when I read that and now I'm laughing so hard my stomach hurts :) I think you're on the right track there. Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale also have to fit in there somewhere--Slinker and Stinker? :)

So you're about my dad's age.

I haven't commented on it before, but yeah, I noticed that. ;)

I had a weird little light-bulb moment the other night, watching "The Hunt for Red October"

I had a moment like that a few years back, riding in a van through Dallas. The person driving was circling around, trying to find a particular hotel, when he turned left onto another street... as I was looking out the window it suddenly occured to me why everything looked so familiar: we were accidentally following the same route the Kennedy motorcade took in 1963...

Were you a conservative at the time? Did the Republicans even like Nixon (before Watergate?)

It's so nice to hear people here talk about these things. My parents have been, but even they regret having seen the 70s and 80s through liberal glasses. Hearing you guys talk about it is a learning experience.

They showed a clip of Reagan getting in the helicopter a few days ago and as I was watching it I felt like I was watching him go up to heaven.

I "campaigned" for Goldwater. ;-)

It was a different era, but yes, Republicans liked Nixon. Not in the same way as Reagan or G.W. Bush.

"A man who wants so desperately to be President, should never be President."

Definitely. One thing I liked about Eisenhower is that he had to practically be dragged into it. He wanted to quit his second term and let someone else run, because his heart was acting up, but he stayed on because others convinced him it would be good for the country. Sometimes I bet GW must feel like that--he must be under unbelievable stress.
