You gotta learn your lesson sometime. That was mine. I dont want her to learn that same lesson in the middle of the night.

We will expect photos posted of course!

Going to be a modest affair, but grand to us. Just close family and a handful of friends who have kept in contact through the deployment. The ones who didnt will be sent a letter letting them know about it and that they are not invited. LOL We are going to host it at the lake where we shared our first day together, and then off to St. Louis where we spent lots of our dating time at the zoo, six flags, the arch, union station etc. Gonna spend some time there doing it all over again. I cant wait and neither can she.

Ouch, don't compare "Shannara" and Potter.

I admit my perceptions are colored because I first ran into Potter when I was 16, lonely, and in desperate need of escapist fantasy; but I enjoy them. I have a number of friends I'd have never met without our mutual interest.

Don't watch the movies; the first two are no good. Well, they have good bits, but read the books. And you have to read the first three before quitting, because book 3 is where it really goes from "neat story, really cool world, I wouldn't mind visiting" to, "whoa, this woman can write!"

Sorry, I shouldn't have used the S-word :) Okay, I'll give the first three books a chance sometime--probably after some Heinlein and Asimov, though, as I'm in a classic SF mood right now. When you first read Potter, what other fantasy had you already read? When I was 16 I think my major fantasy reading other than Tolkien and R.E. Howard was Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series. I also tried to read Moorcock at that time but didn't get past the first Elric book--not sure why, I liked the character and sword but the rest of it lost me for some reason.

I tell ya what, if I come by the money I will take ya'll up on that. :-) I don't forsee having the money. But, it would tickle me pink to meet ya'll and attend that wedding! :-)

*grin* Just got my invite from "the dad." I tell ya, I would be there to see that if it were at all possible. Lakes are some of the best places for weddings IMO... course that is for those of us who don't have seaside beaches. :-)

Oh, everything. Tolkien, CS Lewis, Lloyd Alexandar, "Shannara", Piers Anthony, "Wheel of Time", the "Harold Shea" stories, the "Enchanted Forest Chronicles", four or five different Arthur interpretations...

I've read "Thomas Covenant". Hated it beyond all reason.

Ok, hit my word count, at a good stopping point, it's bedtime.

Definitely :) My cousin got married at this place which overlooks Lake Michigan that has a design like an expensive home overlooking the Mediterranean. It was really nice.

Hmmm--pretty good sign if you had already read that and still liked Potter.

The first time I started the first Thomas Covenant book I got turned off about 50 pages in. But my best friend who was a Tolkien and Lewis fan assured me the rest of the series was worthwhile, so I forced myself to finish the first book, and it definitely got better IMO. I liked the Ravers and the Dune-like stuff, and there's a couple scenes which I really like.

Have a good night!

So I haven't posted to a "hobbit" thread in months. Today I watched ROTK on DVD rental.

Having not seen my son or wife for months, let's just say it GOT TO ME.

I was drinking my wine, and bundled up in everything I owned (the barracks are without heat right now up here in Maine), and had my son's picture on the 'puter screen.

After the movie, I looked at his smiling face, and just broke down. I always thought of myself as a "macho type-man", but damn it, I miss my little boy.

The vivid portrayal of father-son in LOTR just plain wrenches my heart at times like this, worse since it's Memorial Day weekend.

I miss my boy, and my wife. I haven't seen them for months, and I've only spent a few days with them in the past year.

Fortunately, LOTR reminds me of things like Honor, Courage, and Commitment. They give me strength to carry on.

Glad to have you drop in, Long Cut! :) There were parts of LotR that touched some deep feelings like that for me, too. The scenes of the families preparing for the battles were pretty powerful to me. It touches a deep chord of sadness to see the wives and kids bracing themselves for that, but at the same time it reminds you what we're fighting for, which I find inspiring. I am glad to hear you found a source of strength in it.

I just checked Yahoo maps, and it looks like it's only about 25 miles from Fairlee to Lebanon, so I'll probably be there betweeen 4:45 and 5. I'll look for Van-sama in the parking lot!!

Clare's bummed she'd not gonna be there, so y'all are gonna have to plan a weekend trip down to our place during the summer. We'll be here the whole summer except for the second week in August!

I'll have to take a Friday or something this summer so we can have a long weekend and drive down to your place. It'll probably mostly depend on Bilbo's schedule since he has gigs most weekends these days with the bagpipers, but he's gotta have SOME weekend that would work, I'd think!

Good morning!

Lovely day for church here. I just wish there hadn't been fireworks until midnight - they were downtown but it sounded like they were in the backyard. And I didn't even get to see them!

Hello all! We're having a great time, but presently "closet freepin'" while Steve is still in bed. OT slept with Saruman last night and apparently felt pretty much at ease, because she slept CLEAR THROUGH the tornado siren going off for a couple of hours last night. LOL!!!

Seriesly, Steve and I sat up and watched a rotation go right over our street...even mentioned my exact area and the sirens were just a sounding and I kept expecting OT to come running out...but no! I just told her about it this morning and she didn't hear. Ha!!!

We had hotwings on the road grill last night and watched ROTK...decided to stay home and watch it instead of the cinema because of encroaching bad weather.

Planning to go to Woolaroc later on, after eating a large breakfast.

2j

That Gandalf with his fireworks again. . .I'll wager he's dragged mad old Bilbo off on another adventure, where's he's undoubtedly fallen into a pool or river and come to a tragic, if hardly untimely end. If only that dratted wizard will leave young Frodo alone, perhaps he'll settle down and grow some hobbit-sense. . .

He plays the part of Judd, opposite Elijah Woods in the role of Gordon McRae :)

There's a bright golden ring on my finger

There's a bright golden ring on my finger

The pipeweed's as high as an Oliphaunt's eye

And Caradhras is climbing clear up to the sky

Oh what a beautiful morning

Oh what a beautiful day

I've got a beautiful feeling

I'm off with Gandalf the Gray. . .

Good morning!

We were watching RoTK last night too! And I also love the end. If only we could just watch the beginning and the end! But no, we have to endure the middle where the hard parts are.

Glad to hear from you, stop in ~any time~!
