Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A sudden tree or standing stone
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Huh... looks like any slowdown, if there is one, is at Verio.net. Is that FR's ISP?
To: JenB
Well, if you haven't seen the movie I don't want to give it away, but trying to sum it up without spoilers: In the original movie (which is way better than the sequels), Robocop is programmed with a version of Asimov's three laws, but he also has a hidden fourth directive known only to his programmers, which only they can activate and which can be used to prevent him from executing his other directives consistently. There's also a robot which is programmed to enforce the law but is authorized to legally use lethal force, and thus it can be used to murder by misidentifying an innocent target as criminal.

But lookee here... now I'm back to laptop level without the remote and it's werkin' agin. [sigh] beats me.

Asmiov did have a lot of "robot mysteries"... in fact, he had a number of stories involving a human/robot detective team, Elijah Bailey and R. Daneel Olivaw.
I've been looking for something to read, lately... maybe I need to go back to the classics. A lot of them I haven't read since high school, or even earlier...

Yes, I have those books, but they didn't involve robots as murder suspects, IIRC.
Did you know they're supposedly turning both "Have Space Suit Will Travel" and "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" into movies? Has there ever been a good movie based on one of RAH's books?

No, some of his books had similar premises... Which of Asimov's books have you read and which would you recommend to a relative Asimov newbie? I'm familiar with the basics but want to get more into his work.

I've had occasional slow response from FR, or even no response, but it usually comes back with a refresh. Not seeing the kind of dropouts you are. Maybe it's the FR server being flaky? Don't have any clue why it would hit you particulary hard there, though.
Maybe it's a "perfect storm" of several little DNS and server problems adding up?

Has there ever been a good movie based on one of RAH's books?Well, I liked Starship Troopers but I know I'm a minority of one there :) But Jen, have you seen Desination: Moon? I believe that was the earliest Heinlein adaptation and he actually co-wrote the script. It's a period piece, but true to his spirit, IMO. I've also seen decent adaptations of Puppet Masters.

Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation. I didn't like Foundation's Edge or Foundation and Earth. Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation were good.
The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, The Robots of Dawn.
I, Robot. Robot Dreams.
Those are the important ones.

Jen, I think the murder mystery I'm (mis)remembering is the plot to The Caves of Steel.
To: JenB
Thanks! I'm familiar with the first Foundation and I, Robot but the rest I still need to read. How'd you like "Nightfall"?--I liked that a lot.

No, but it wasn't really an adaption of "Rocket Ship Galileo", after all. Just a lot of similarities, or so I understand.
I've never seen any adaptation of "Puppet Masters".

"Nightfall" was ok. I'm not sure why it's such a classic. I liked "The Bicentennial Man" much better.

Did you know they're supposedly turning both "Have Space Suit Will Travel" and "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" into movies?I didn't know that. I think both would make good movies if done properly, but I don't hold out any hope that they will be done properly.
Has there ever been a good movie based on one of RAH's books?
"Puppet Masters" started out good, but then fell apart about halfway through, IMHO. "Destination: Moon" was faithful to Heinlein, but I don't think it works well as a movie; too much "Gee whiz, look at this effect!" going on, to the detriment of the story.
