OK, I'm done my fudge pop "ice cream" and I dunno enough to participate in this conversation...so I'm heading to bed to read and then sleep. See ya tomorrow!
Well, if you haven't seen the movie I don't want to give it away, but trying to sum it up without spoilers: In the original movie (which is way better than the sequels), Robocop is programmed with a version of Asimov's three laws, but he also has a hidden fourth directive known only to his programmers, which only they can activate and which can be used to prevent him from executing his other directives consistently. There's also a robot which is programmed to enforce the law but is authorized to legally use lethal force, and thus it can be used to murder by misidentifying an innocent target as criminal.
I think so... but FR is in a cage somewhere in a rack farm.
But lookee here... now I'm back to laptop level without the remote and it's werkin' agin. [sigh] beats me.
I've been looking for something to read, lately... maybe I need to go back to the classics. A lot of them I haven't read since high school, or even earlier...
Test this.
Yes, I have those books, but they didn't involve robots as murder suspects, IIRC.
Did you know they're supposedly turning both "Have Space Suit Will Travel" and "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" into movies? Has there ever been a good movie based on one of RAH's books?
Night Rosie! See you tomorrow.
Remember, three day weekend! Woo-hoo!
Which of Asimov's books have you read and which would you recommend to a relative Asimov newbie? I'm familiar with the basics but want to get more into his work.
Have a good night, Rosie!
Maybe it's a "perfect storm" of several little DNS and server problems adding up?
Well, I liked Starship Troopers but I know I'm a minority of one there :) But Jen, have you seen Desination: Moon? I believe that was the earliest Heinlein adaptation and he actually co-wrote the script. It's a period piece, but true to his spirit, IMO. I've also seen decent adaptations of Puppet Masters.
Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation. I didn't like Foundation's Edge or Foundation and Earth. Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation were good.
The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, The Robots of Dawn.
I, Robot. Robot Dreams.
Those are the important ones.
Ditto to what Jen said! ;)
Jen, I think the murder mystery I'm (mis)remembering is the plot to The Caves of Steel.
No, but it wasn't really an adaption of "Rocket Ship Galileo", after all. Just a lot of similarities, or so I understand.
I've never seen any adaptation of "Puppet Masters".
Thanks for the ditto! If both of you recommend the same thing I know it must be right :)
"Nightfall" was ok. I'm not sure why it's such a classic. I liked "The Bicentennial Man" much better.
I didn't know that. I think both would make good movies if done properly, but I don't hold out any hope that they will be done properly.
Has there ever been a good movie based on one of RAH's books?
"Puppet Masters" started out good, but then fell apart about halfway through, IMHO. "Destination: Moon" was faithful to Heinlein, but I don't think it works well as a movie; too much "Gee whiz, look at this effect!" going on, to the detriment of the story.
