Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A sudden tree or standing stone

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yup, the most annoying requirements we had were the "you must teach PA history in 6th grade and American history in 8th grade and World history..." Almost as bad as the "you must teach fire safety every year" requirement.

I liked to learn history, once I reached high school, by reading a biography or a book on a subject. Maybe we'd chose a period, but we didn't often use actual texts. That was a little harder to do with stupid state requirements.

My wife and kids attended an SBC church over the weekend while they were away and the minister at the evening service was talking about the war between the Yankees and the Americans. ;^)

We're at war folks...with our nextdoor neighbors.

Yes we are, and it's revolting.

This week it has hit home in a personal way that I may need to even interact with the RATS to get something done that I've been trying to do at the school. There are many students at the college who are as I was when I went back to school after Myranda's dad walked out. Single moms with no real ability to adequately support their children unless they finish some sort of training. There are a lot of resources available for these ladies but often they go unused because no one knows of them.

The college where I went had one lady who had taken it upon herself to network with different agencies and offices who provided help for single moms. She did this over and above her regular job duties at that college and helped me tremendously. Truly, I would not have the education if she had not done this. Therefore, I have been trying to gather this information here myself to share with students from all programs at the campus.

Unfortunately in doing so I have to hob nob with many of the kind of people I don't like. RATS and worse - feminist RATS. This week I was given the names of two ladies with private foundations here in town who would like to help. I have already determined that their politics are loathsome. And yet, my view on this is that if I get the single moms through school then they are contributing members of society, no longer taking gubmint checks. Not only does this benefit society as a whole, but 1) will allow these ladies to gain self-worth from being able to do this, 2) allows them to be more wholesome role models for their children and 3) provides a better life for those children.

Normally I would kinda just blow off any kind of interaction with the 2 ladies I was connected with this week. But, they represent a lot of possible fundage for helping some people through school.

You're welcome...glad to help :)
I have an old LP, The Song of America composed by Roy Ringwald and performed by Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians...a great deal of poetic Americana set to music, which helps me remember the poetry better than if I had merely heard it spoken or read it.
I can share more of it as dates and events make it relevant. This July 4, for example, I intend to post an excerpt from a piece titled "The Building of the Ship" whose author's name escapes me for the moment.

I've always wanted to get down to Colonial Williamsburg. SSQ was talking about taking the kids to DC for a few days; do the Smithsonian thing, etc. But with the remodel fixing to gear up, I'm not sure if we're going to be able to do it this year, and Joseph is going back to school next year. He's going to the high school our older boys attended; it's an excellent school. Clare is gonna stay home though for her last two years. She'll be starting some courses at a local college next year.

Our local homeschool association has wonderful field trips. I'm sure y'all have a good one there, too.

We're upset about the dog, but it looks like he'll be ok. What's really scary is that my little brothers were in the yard at the same time, and they don't have two inches of hair to protect them.

Ok, so not all Rottweilers are evil and vicious. This one is, and its owners know that, and they still let it get away from them.

Very cool! I would like to hear that LP. Not exactly possible here but I bet I would like it. I bet my dad would like it too.

Remember why it is that we know about this stuff: not because an escaped prisoner smuggled photos and stories out of the prison, but because one of the soldiers assigned there reported it.

Remember, too, why justice will be done: because we will do it ourselves, rather than have an outside organization or nation come in and do it "to" us.

Remind those that need reminding.

Dad did his usual rant and then poured the whole thing over Stephen's head.

Yep, I'm sure that drove the point home very well! LOL!!

We haven't gotten involved with the homeschool association yet. But wife is thinking she'll go to the state homeschool convention.

Yeah, but my parents had to go over to their house. Two houses down, you'd think they'd check to make sure our dog was ok.

My dad is threatening to get a pellet gun.

Tell me how to upload mp3s here so they can be played by freepers (and visitors), and I'll see what I can do about excerpting it. :)

There's a big homeschool group in the DC area that my mom helped start, 15 years ago. Up here, there are smaller groups, we never got as involved. Though we've been part of two different co-ops.
