Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Bay is better. Even came trotting in from the pasture when he saw me. I think he thought he might get his missing grain.
In the winter here when it is bitter cold, I have taken hot tap water in a bucket and poured that in the trough to melt ice and warm it up. It doesn't stay warm very long, but if they're waiting for it, they'll go right over...
Work and worry? - I haven't even told you about the hot mashes I feed when it is bitter cold ;~D
I am glad to see Bay is better. It is quite a scare, but you did well. We always keep a tube of paste Banamine around. An Arabian filly, that we rescued, was prone to colic. Once the worms were taken care of, and she was brought into condition, her colics were less frequent. She was 9 months old when we got her, and just turned 5.
Pastures in the summer, especially without sufficent rain fall, tend to get overgrazed. The horses start picking at the foliage not very suitable to them. At least that happens in this neck of the woods.
Grabbing leaves, and other greenery on the trail is another thing to watch out for. There are a lot of plants out there that are very noxious to horses.
The recovery time from a bout of colic is pretty quick. Once that pressure is off, they do fine.
Good luck!
On a side note, I must say that I love that pony.
Yeah - a bit of a brought. It hasn't rained at all in over a month. :~\
I'd love for you to come ride that pony!
She jumps like a deer, she's just kindof a wild ride sometimes!
She has a lot of potential, and she certainly is a ~pretty~ pony. She had 30 days training three years ago now, but she proved to be too fractious and volatile for a child to handle, so she was given to me as a companion for Bay. She has settled down a lot, but explosions are not out of the question even now. She was abused, I am fairly certain of that. A mistake leads to nervousness and she will just shake. I have to try to get to her and lay a quiet hand on her before she will breathe and relax again. I've lunged and ground driven her, saddled and worked with her quite a bit, but I am too big to ride her. She's only 12.2. She trusts me more now than she did, but turning her into the little pony club pony I know she ~could~ be would take a lot of work.
At the moment, besides her very important job of keeping Bay company, we've been wondering if she could be a pack pony. It would give her some good experience and to pony with Bay some miles on trail rides for awhile. Or, she might take off with all our stuff ;~D
I think the older she gets, she'll naturally settle down, and there hasn't been a hurry. I had one person try to buy her, but they weren't taking her seriously, weren't interested in investing in training, underestimating her temerament because she was good that day, and I was not about to sell her to someone who would turn around and blame her or me for a kid getting hurt because she was put where she wasn't ready to go by a dumb parent.
Well, time has passed! She's an estimated 7 now. There has been great confusion over her age. When my friend bought her for her child, she was told she was six. And my vet told me she was only six last year when I had her teeth floated. I've had her 3 years, which means she was actually three years old when we plopped a kid on her.
She was bought at auction. A child rode her there in the ring and she was quiet as can be. (till the drugs wore off at home) :~\
Hello.
It's 96 here:(. Rusty is not doing good in the heat. No colic but you can tell he's struggling. Respiration up.
Becky
Poor Rusty. Sprinkler games?
It's nice here today. Overcast and 76. Bay is still coming up and munching hay from time to time and doing well this afternoon.
I think tonight I will resume his isoxoprene and grain. I didn't want to add anything unnecessary to his belly this morning, but if I go too long without his meds, his feet will hurt. If it's not one thing, it's another!
Ijust gave him his afternoon feeding. When he finishes up, I'm going to hose him off, spray him with fly spray and put him in the back where it's shady but he can still catch the breeze. I don't know what else to do. In his run he stands in the blazing sun and it's hot, and the flies eat on him, in his stall, less flies, he's in the shade and I know it's cooler there because I moved his water in there and it's staying alot cooler there. But no breeze, and some dust even if I wet it down.
Wonder what Mack would do if he came home and found a horse in one of the back empty bedrooms:)

We are going to have heat late in the week, predicting 90s on Friday and Saturday. It's cooler in the back forty where there's shade, but I need to get a comfort level back with putting him back in the woods.
That's the trouble.... still don't know ~why~
LOL...not knowing will make you crazy.
My daughter and her step son are coming to ride tomorrow morning. I'll be sure to take trail pictures.
