The Hobbit Hole VIII - Still round the corner we may meet...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner we may meet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well, I've put my brushes away and am heading for the sack.
Can't imagine why I'm still up.

Good night, everyone.

I saw nothing where used to be concrete foundations of a subdivision.

What this guy was talking about was concrete all the way up to the roof with strong steel running all through the concrete! I wouldn't mind having that down south, I think it would be cool in the summer with the a/c on low, and nice and toasty in the winter with an effective R-22 insulation rating!

We're going to do the forms for the basement walls. At the very end of the basement, it's all the way out of the ground, about 10', but closer up to the existing house, the wall will only be about half exposed.

Soupy and I are going to Anime Boston today! It is all weekend long, which is a pain because it's Easter weekend, but they have it the same time every year. We're gonna hop out for an hour this afternoon and go to the Stations of the Cross at a church near the Park Plaza.

Rosie, you and DaBear and I are in the wrong business! We could charge $100 an hour and be seen as bargain-rate!

MMmmm...yeah!

On the other hand...I like working for the same place all the time, so you KNOW when so-and-so calls, it's almost certainly a loose cable, and that whatsisname only calls when his computer is already dead, so don't bother spending much phone time on it. And being the face of computer support for them.

I know that's different than what you do, but it's where I'm happiest, though it's probably the lowest paying job in the IT world! I may complain at times, but I love my job, I really do.

Did y'all sing "Tantum Ergo" tonight? At first we sang 3 verses in English, then the cantor started singingin Latin. It was amazing because I remembered almost ALL of it! It's been almost 35 years since I sung it in Latin! What was amazing was that it sounded like half the church was singing it! Shows you how 'old' the population of our Parish is!

We did the same...first did "O Saving Victim" in English and then Latin, and then after we got to the altar of repose did "Tantum Ergo" in English, then Latin. I remembered almost all of it...went to a school in high school where we had daily exposition and benediction, so we sang it every day...catch was that we used the chant melody rather than the ones people seem to use more commonly.

I'd hum it for ya, but I'm afraid you wouldn't hear it...

Yes, it is very quiet! I have the day off, though it being Good Friday, I won't be doing a bunch of partying or anything. ;-)

Going to pick up some siblings in a few minutes to get some things we'll need for Easter...Dad HATES that job, so he's outsourcing...

Ah, day off, nice. My sister and I are going out for lunch today, but that's it.

Service last night was very nice but we didn't get home until 10, and I was just wiped out. I was going to write, but I ended up just going to bed.

Thanks Jen. We are doing it today because there are no classes and it gives us a good day to be in places within and without the school where we just need to set up specific shots. Appreciate your prayers.

I'm sorry guys. . .I posted last night and almost immediately went to sleep only to wake up at 4:00 am today. I still have not adjusted to the time and all.

I figure that the UK is closer to the "French" system now (socialism) than to the "English" system of individual liberty.
Same goes for us here in the US, though we are not quite as far down the road (to Serfdom) as the UK is. I doubt that either country can get back to where we were 100 years ago.
I think the Democrats are actively destroying our traditions of freedom, and am not even sure the Republicans care.

Sam, I am in total agreement. I think this is what Tolkien was writing about in the "Scouring Of The Shire". The enviromental issues were a symptom of the sick system.

did you still like it over there, and enjoy the English?

Oh yes, I love the English. I think that is why I was so sad to see their culture compromised.
I am sorry for sounding so negative. I didn't mean to. I think just "worn out" still.

The terrorist thing (trains in Spain, the "stings" in the UK, ect.)made it tense esp. while traveling back home.
One lady at the airport said she never thought she would see in Britian government officals carrying guns openly. The papers were writing for one to be on guard, that an attack could happened at any time. It felt somewhat like it did here in the states after 9-11.
I was staying at the Hilton by the airport in Manchester while waiting to fly out. Terry had left a couple of days earilier so I was alone there. It gave me an opportunity to just observe the people and what all was going on.
It was kinda funny, during the week days, the hotel was very "Euro" with all the business people running about during business, looking very "Euro".
On the weekend the hotel went back to the British culture. They had a traditional "British Sunday Roast and Quiz". The hotel was filled with families (most not staying there), some three generations, eating at long tables all over the eating area.. . I guess kinda of a throw back to the English manor "great halls", like the "Golden Hall" scene in LOTR.
It great fun watching the families eat and get all excited about answering the "quiz sheets" the hotel had placed on each table. At the end an announcer, who also played the piano for the gathering, went to the microphone to give the answers, as well as annouce all the B-days, ect. It was all so sweet. I hope this is not lost. We even had "quiz time" on the flight home after we had watched every movie, ect. they had to show us.

You still have pockets of culture there, just like any country. Hoping this up coming generation will not forget. Maybe the films from LOTR, which are so rich with it will help to keep it alive.
Please forgive me if I was negative. . .might should have rested more until I posted.
'
can't get over the picture of you guys in the pub where the Inklings met. Not that I knew they met in a pub. It's somehow reassuring to know that they did

I loved that concept too. Going there was one of my heart's desire. I am thankful we were able to do so. Hope everyone enjoys the plaques and the pictures on the walls.

Do hope you all are right about Blair. I am in a wait and see place.
