Sword fights are good! Giving the characters names would also be good :) Maybe if it's too long try it as a short story first?

May is a good month to be born. In fact I made my mother wait a week so that I could be born in May...

It is interesting that she wouldn't have had her teeth fixed. She certainly had the money for good teeth. I wonder the same thing about Alan Lee.

I'm not sure how to make it short, but maybe I can start with the hero's youth. Um, this is way influenced by the Japanese history/culture stuff I've been researching...

If all you had available to fix your teeth were British dentists, would *you* go?

Wildlife encounter today: Woodpecker.

It was a tree guy who told me that if a woodpecker is in a tree, the tree is dying. No bugs in healthy trees.

how are you liking Potter? If you become a fan, please help me figure out why I like them. Well, I like them because she writes in an interesting way. You can imagine the scenario and with the help of the movies, 'see' the characters doing things. The stories are humorous, too, so they're fun to read aloud.
SSQ is enjoying them; we're on the last one now. We read a chapter aloud to the kids each night. They've already read them three time each (at least), but it's still fun hearing the story rather than doing the mental work having to read it.

To shorten it you could try taking a single episode in the character's life rather than a whole story--like a single swordfight during his early training, for instance. Compare with the beginning of
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where there's the flashback episode from Indy's youth with the Cross of Coronado. It's short but complete in itself apart from the main story. Most James Bond movies have a similar opening segment which could stand alone as a "short story" if it were in written form.
So what are you getting out of the Japanese history research?

How fun!
My mother helped read the last one aloud. Fortunately she read the death scene. I think I would have thrown the book across the room if I had been reading it.
It's a neat idea. Not that original but she does it so well. And her little touches are so nice. The spells are all Latin-sounding words, the magical creatures are genuine mythological beats (er... you know). It's fun.

There's at least several woodpeckers that hang out in the woods behind the house here. I wonder if that means some of the trees are sick?

Mostly, why on earth don't fantasy writers ever use Asian-sounding names?
Also the impossibly stratified feudal system is a neat idea. I'm typing some notes up now for the story. Or rather the first long section of the story. Then I can put it away, or work on it, as I like.
