"farm" the dead
Posted on 03/28/2004 12:21:11 PM PST by one_eyed_penguin
I was completely shocked when I read this article. Yes, shocked! This is no fiction of horror, it DOES exist in real life.
A so-called "dead" farm is a place where seveal acres of private land surrounded by barbwire, in a sleepy town of Tennessee, where this guy collects unclaimed and donated corpse for his deeds under the disguise of scientific research.
Unclaimed body, young and old, men and women, placed in various places inside his so-called farm allow them to decay and consumed by various insects. The maggots will consume a human body in just one day, he said in smile. Dr. Bill Bass is an anthropologist, he dedicated himself for this type of research.
We all agree that a decent burial upon death, along with life and liberty are fundamental rights for all human being. A human body belongs to oneself, no one has the rights to claim them or use them for any means. It's a precious gift to oneself by The Mighty Lord.
I felt pity for those who died and treated this way by this evil man, their soul may NOT RIP.

I don't know what to say, this is a crime against humanity, cannot be justified, this guy deserves life sentence if not death, burn in hell

this guy deserves life sentence if not deathUh, of what crime should he be convicted? While his "hobby" is weird and creepy, it still does not seem to be a crime.

I believe this "farm" is part of the forensics laboratory system. It has been featured on television several times, and the information that is gained by the observations help crime laboratories to solve crimes.
To: one_eyed_penguin
Isnt this the place where donated bodies are used to help solve murders? If this is the same place Ive seen on television, forensic science is being done here to help catch and convict murderers. If people are freely donating thier bodies to science, I see no problem with this. A murderer could walk without this kind of science being done. Yeah I wish this wasnt necessary, but I wish people didnt commit murder too. If its the same place Im thinking of, it is necessary science for our legal system to best serve justice.

This corpse farm is owned, IIRC, by the University of Tennessee, and is used to train forensic anthropologists, who do indeed investigate murders and other suspicious deaths. I might be wrong about this next part, not having read the article, but I think that participation of corpses is volontary, permission having been obtained prior to demise, of course.

Umm, with all due respect, if this is the doctor I've seen featured on TV crime shows, he's done amazing research into the effects of the elements on decomposing bodies.
And because of his detailed research, many many murderers have been convicted.
No, it's not "pretty" but it's an area that needed clear perimeters.

Personally, the idea of being buried in a coffin gives me the willies. I wouldn't be caught dead in one.
At least with the maggots, I'm out in the open, so to speak.
This might be an even better alternative-- Donated bodies blown up by Army

a human body live or dead belongs to oneself, not objects.
if we so-called human is any different from other low-life forms, we must show respect to our own race. This is still a fundamental rights.

Yes, scientific research help law enforcement slove crimes, but you cannot commit a crime to solve a crime.
To: one_eyed_penguin
Yes, your body belongs to you, and if you so choose you may donate your corpse to this program. Why do you have a problem with people disposing of thier remains as they see fit?

I believe in humanity, human race deserves respects by itself, alive or dead. Then why should we risk the lifes of many others trying to bring back the dead ones (men or women in uniform) on frontline battlefield, showing respect to other people is an honor of human race.
To: one_eyed_penguin
how about "leaves no one behind?" It's not necessary then, we want to make a difference, We do respect fundamental human rights and that's the way we do it.
To: one_eyed_penguin
I understand what you are trying to say, but the point you may be missing is that these people are not body-snatchers or graverobbers. The people doing this research are helping to catch and convict very bad people who have no business among us. They are not using corpses unless they were donated by the person who became the corpse. If you have infomation contrary-wise,please post a link to it.
If, after I die, I wish for my mortal remains to be used for this research, how is that being disrespectful to my corpse, since it is what I wished while alive?
And what dang difference does does it make, anyway? Once I am departed from this body, it will no more be me than the oak tree in my front yard is now.

You keep calling this a crime. It is NOT. Perhaps you disagree MORALLY, but it is still not a crime.

It's still not justified, like I said before ones life and body are indivisible elements of oneself called human. no one has the rights to claim these elements.
Slavery was legal in ancient times, common people's life too are not considered meaningful by kings, emperors, tyrants whatever. The time has changed, now we do respect these fundamental human rights.
I may think ahead of our time? Maybe, I wish one day we should all understand human life and body are a precious things given by The Mighty Lord. I wish we never have to do this again.
To: EggsAckley
Ok, It's not a crime by our standard, but it's morally unjustified.
To: one_eyed_penguin
Google results on Dr. Bill Bass quite an interesting story.
IMHO, it is far from a crime. It is a vital and important piece of research that he is doing. And I also think, at least for me personally, its a lot better than beong stuck in a box and buried under the dirt. My body is just a container for my spirit.

Yes, morally unjustified, but not a crime by our standard.
murders deserves death due to the fact that they have comitted a terrible crime called man slaughter.
The thing is how could you do this to someone's body who has nothing to do with the criminals. It's absolutely un-necessary and against morality.
How about unclaimed bodies of murder victims used for this research, that's NOT legal and a crime.
It's the murder who deserve death and research on his (or her) body not victim, innocent people deserves a decent burial.
If I have the $ I would not hesitate donate some to the local government so they can bury the unclaimed bodies of murder victims.
To: one_eyed_penguin
Why should good and innocent people pay that hefty price for the murder while the murder killing more innocent people then RIP?
murders must pay for their price by murdering someone, having their body researched. We need a system like that.
