Uh, of what crime should he be convicted? While his "hobby" is weird and creepy, it still does not seem to be a crime.

I believe this "farm" is part of the forensics laboratory system. It has been featured on television several times, and the information that is gained by the observations help crime laboratories to solve crimes.

Isnt this the place where donated bodies are used to help solve murders? If this is the same place Ive seen on television, forensic science is being done here to help catch and convict murderers. If people are freely donating thier bodies to science, I see no problem with this. A murderer could walk without this kind of science being done. Yeah I wish this wasnt necessary, but I wish people didnt commit murder too. If its the same place Im thinking of, it is necessary science for our legal system to best serve justice.

Umm, with all due respect, if this is the doctor I've seen featured on TV crime shows, he's done amazing research into the effects of the elements on decomposing bodies.

And because of his detailed research, many many murderers have been convicted.

No, it's not "pretty" but it's an area that needed clear perimeters.

Personally, the idea of being buried in a coffin gives me the willies. I wouldn't be caught dead in one.

At least with the maggots, I'm out in the open, so to speak.

This might be an even better alternative-- Donated bodies blown up by Army

Google results on Dr. Bill Bass quite an interesting story.

IMHO, it is far from a crime. It is a vital and important piece of research that he is doing. And I also think, at least for me personally, its a lot better than beong stuck in a box and buried under the dirt. My body is just a container for my spirit.

This is cool!

They showed something like this on Discovery or was it USA channel.
The research this guy does is used in forensic police detective work to charge killers with crimes.

What this person does is not a crime, but benefits society by helping to catch killers who think they can get away with murder.

Unclaimed body, young and old, men and women, placed in various places inside his so-called farm allow them to decay and consumed by various insects. The maggots will consume a human body in just one day, he said in smile. Dr. Bill Bass is an anthropologist, he dedicated himself for this type of research.

But... WHY????

(and a supersize "eeeeww" for good measure.)

I believe that there is such a "farm" used to research how long a human body takes to decay under various conditions and circumstances. That information is used by criminologists to help determine how long a person has been dead (if the body is in advanced stages of decay, so that it's far more difficult to determine time of death) and so may help solve the murder.

I've seen this 'farm' on one of the education channels, History or Discovery or some such.

The corpses are scientifically examined in every stage of decomposition. The results of this research are used in criminal investigation, and in the courts.

It's nasty, but it serves a legitimate purpose.

I saw Beethoven in there and asked him what he was doing. "Decomposing," he said.

As a University of Tennessee student, I am outraged at your comments.

First of all, Knoxville, is not some "sleepy Tennessee town." It's a mid-sized city of several hundred thousand people.

The "body farm" as it's known, largely because of the book by Patrica Cornwell, is an important, world-reknown research center. The FBI trains here regularly. Dr. Bass is one of the most respected forensic scientists in the world, and UT is very lucky to have him.

The bodies that they use are very respected. They are either people that donate their bodies to the project specifically, or are unclaimed ones. They are put in a variety of situations to so forensic scientists can understand when a person died, what killed them, etc. when a body is discovered in the elements.

This "crime against humanity" has solved hundreds of crimes, and helped put many criminals behind bars. I suggest you actually do a little thing called a google search before you post such a ludicrous and uninformed post again.

However, I suppose if you or one of your family members was brutally killed and left in the elements, you'd prefer the police to not use any of the important information gleaned from these facts because Dr. Bass and not the murderer deserves to "burn in hell."
