Denver Synagogue Vandalized(Passion of Christ Blamed)

DENVER - A Denver synagogue was damaged with graffiti overnight. Swastikas were drawn on the synagogue on south Monaco Parkway.

The graffiti was in the doorway and across a sign. There were also several symbols drawn on the back wall of the building.

A holocaust survivor who saw the graffiti says it was almost too much to take. There was no official response available from the congregation Saturday, although several people who called 9NEWS to report the damage said that they blamed Mel Gibson’s movie “The Passion of the Christ” for rekindling anti-Semitism.

Members of the congregation will gather Sunday morning to start cleaning off the graffiti.

As I said, not all Semites are Jews; not all Jews are Semites.

Antisemitism is a meaningless term, though still a great button-pusher. 117 posted on 03/06/2004 10:28:33 PM PST by ApplegateRanch

Are you will willing to withdraw that comment?

Which one? The first statement is true.

The second one, if you think I meant that I use it to push buttons, then it is totally not true.

Meant as I meant it, that it is all too often used recklessly to stir emotion, rather than promote rational discussion of a very real problem, it is true.

If we can keep the term "antisemitism" to the real, gut wrenching hatred it originally referred to, and not try to apply it to every percieved insult, THEN it will truely have meaning again.

As it is, it is being overused and watered down, and is fast losing the horror of what it really was; as that happens, the meaning also becomes lost on those hearing it.

What needs to be done is concentrate less on fast labeling, and more on the content and actions involved, and ending them; or punnishing those who continue doing them.

Thanks for putting it to me in a rational manner, so it can be discussed, rather than fought over.

They are speaking out about the danger because they don't want to see the U.S. become susceptible to this evil.

Then why don't they say that rather than criticize Christians who support this film.

It makes little sense to diss your friends when you might fear that they would do something stupid like being critical of you.

I hope you understand what I just said because I am about to check out for some sleep.:-)

However, Germany was just one step out of being pagan barbarians, despite Beethoven and Goethe.

And it was a very young democracy and didn't have as many checks and balances as our republic does.

Nor was it a culture predominantly made up of peoples from all over the world.

That being said in favor of America, yes, "IT" could happen here. But I am more worried about "IT" being homosexuals or Hispanics than Jews.

"This movie had none of this. It was the rage inspired by the innocences of the Christ that caused it to be so horrific."

As you say. But I am hearing that there are other aspects too. One man, Christian, on our local radio station who saw it said that it was the most violent movie he had ever seen or will see and you should not let anyone bully you into going to see it. He also read a positive review that described Jesus after the scourging as "as dripping scare crow of agony." More than one description says the torture scene is almost gothic.

Beyond that I just have a hard time with thinking that a movie is that important in the scheme of Christianity or that Mel Gibson is God's only annointed film maker. He's okay I guess but I think I'll just stick with the Bible and the Mass.

"aren't you afraid to get flamed on this discussion ? I adore your opinion!!!!"

No, though people could argue that (under the circumstances), Christ would not have gone into shock. I would have no rebuttal for that. Although I would assure you that a normal person would.

Well, Janette does have her point. I don't need to experience prostitution or murder to have the opinion that it is not a good thing.

I don't usually speculate about the identity of perpetrators but the odds are very high that they are multicult-inspired teen-age dhimmi-conformists acting out their stupid adolescent version of solidarity with "oppressed" Muslims. This is based on none other than the ADL's own compiliation of similar incidents during the past 3 years. (BTW, ADL doesn't give a lot of publicity to this compilation, just possibly because it reflects very badly on peacenik liberal Israel-bashers.)

You said you are German. I wanted to know if by that you really meant your parents or grandparent were, or that you were born there but now are naturalized. Or if you are actually German, not American.

TEll us, Mr. Christian Expert, what's the difference between Esangelicals and Fundamentalists?

Let's assume you are honest, sincere, and asking the question because you do not know. I'll try to find some links from the parties themselves to give you an idea of how they view themselves. The short answer is the there are at least two distinct groups of churches with differences in who they accept as genuine.

"The Passion" attracted attention because of its truth. Before "Passion" all that was offered in the way of religious film was watered down Hollywood tripe. This was the first visual that even came close to what Jesus actually went through. Because of its clear adherance to the Gospels it was attacked. Don't let yourself be fooled into thinking that the violence is what caused it to be attacked. Hollywood has been the distributor of violence in America for many many years and never have you heard a peep out of the people who have declared this movie "too violent" until now.

Could also be connected to the multi-million dollar settlement to be paid by ADL to a former Denver couple.

I suspect that this will get more press.

I remember getting flak last year when I said I couldn't handle going to see LOTR II at that time because it looked like it was going to be a dark movie.

This movie fandom is not limited to Passion.

And as much as I liked Passion; it is still simply a movie. I never ever got confused and thought it was really Christ up there on the screen.

Which one? The first statement is true.

The first statement is false. Antisemitism is not a meaningless term. It has a dictionary definition, which I linked from Antisemitsm. You are not being intellectually honest in this discussion.

    an·ti-Sem·i·tism (nt-sm-tzm, nt-) n.
  1. Hostility toward or prejudice against Jews or Judaism.
  2. Discrimination against Jews.

You may not like the definition. You may want to erase it from memory and history but even on this night of Purim, it and the Jews are still here. You will have to live with that.

The poster explained his somewhat raunchy post IMO.

He spun it, he never apologized for his raunchy post, its rude behavior and he needs to called on it, and besides that I don't care what your opinion is. BigMack

This still won't knock Martha off the front headlines...the cable newsies are besides themselves because they all liked going to her parties, etc.

I do think that within a day you will hear someone suggest that Mel should hand over some money to this synagogue...along the lines of people asking if he would donate all the profits to the Pope. (Fat Chance)
