That would be like academic heaven! :) I actually do have this secret desire to learn the languages Tolkien knew (or at least some of them, LOL!) so I can read the stuff he did. Got a lot of languages to go yet, though! Old English is high on my list of things I want to learn next. I can't wait for Tolkien's edition of Beowulf to come out, supposedly this year--anyone heard any recent news on that?
I just skimmed the link--looks like a good program. I want to add some running to my routine once it warms up a bit, so I may incorporate some ideas from that. Right now I follow the same principle they mention of 20-30 minutes 3 times a week, except I was doing it through rowing this summer, and now that it's cold out I do it indoors through the cardiokickboxing routine I mentioned a buncha posts back, which is basically 4 sets of a sequence of punches, angled punches, pivoting blocks, and kicks followed up with sets of sit-ups, push-ups, and bicep/tricep curls. In addition to that I do a Tai Chi type thing every morning when I wake up for about 40-60 minutes, followed by some Yoga-type stretching. Seems to be working pretty good for me as long as I stick with it, but if I miss a day and get out of my routine the hard part is getting back into it.
Regarding Atkins, one of my online training partners is on that, too. He's lost about 50 pounds so far. The only problem he had was that at a certain point he was getting brittle skin on his fingertips, but that went away once he started taking some nutrient supplements.
Unfortunately, there aren't a lotta people in northeastern Vermont who know much about either...can't imagine why...
LOL! Yeah, Old Norse is another one I'm interested in at the moment, on account of I'm reading these Old Norse epics right now. I actually live in a community with a lot of Norse influence (my Dad even speaks some Norwegian, though of course the language has changed considerably from Old Norse), so I'm hoping someone around here has donated some textbooks to a library or sold them to a used bookstore or something. But so far I'm still in the market for textbooks, and meanwhile I pick up what I can from online tutorials. I'm hoping to find a computer program with multimedia features so you can hear the language out loud--I find languages a lot easier to pick up that way than if I just try to pick it up from a textbook alone.
She says after picking up #8,100 :)
Ah, Bratwurst--we like Bratwurst here in Wisconsin :)
U-Green Bay is relatively near me. They might have it, though Madison is more Tolkienesque and into that type of thing--there's a big Tolkien group there. But I'd prefer if I could find a textbook/tape/computer tutorial so I could learn at home--the homeschooling thing we were discussing :) However come to think of it if U-Green Bay has it maybe they sell textbooks at the school bookstore--hmmm. . .
I know how you feel--I used to do more when I was in high school :) But like you say, you need to work up to it. If you can get in the habit of 20 minutes 3-4 days a week for a while you'll be doing well. I started off like that and after about a month I found I could add on 10 minutes pretty easy. I think part of the key is periodically pushing yourself to do more than you're used to doing, but don't push yourself so far you overdo it and get discouraged. It sounds like you're doing pretty good :)
We used to drive past there periodically when visiting my grandparents and uncle :) My grandparents on my Dad's side are from just a bit north of Eau Claire; my Dad's brother lived down by LaCrosse for a while but is back up in Eau Claire now. My Mom's ancestors were from the Door County peninsula, but moved down to Milwaukee, which is where I grew up. Now I'm back up in Door County, about 70 miles east of Green Bay.
You'll find more than a few Texans are hooked on these.
