If I COULD study something in depth, though, it would probably be language - old languages, the ones Tolkien drew on. Can you imagine having him as a professor?

That would be like academic heaven! :) I actually do have this secret desire to learn the languages Tolkien knew (or at least some of them, LOL!) so I can read the stuff he did. Got a lot of languages to go yet, though! Old English is high on my list of things I want to learn next. I can't wait for Tolkien's edition of Beowulf to come out, supposedly this year--anyone heard any recent news on that?

Yeah, Old English and Old Norse.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lotta people in northeastern Vermont who know much about either...can't imagine why...
