The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I got my first grad school acceptance notice!

It was from my "safety school" - Colorado State, I applied there because I knew I'd get accepted and hopefully could transfer somewhere after my master's degree. They're offering me a very nice financial package, too, so - I'm going somewhere, I just don't know where yet! But I'm going!

Hey...does anyone have a screen shot of Gollum's "not listening" pose?

We wants it...we needs it...

Well, near the end of Season 2, Lyta Alexander (the station's first resident telepath) showed up, on the run from Psi Corps. Highlight for spoilers:

Lyta told the station crew that she knew there was a Psi Corps spy on B5, but she didn't know who it was. The spy was in the form of a telepathically implanted personality; the person would not even realize he/she was a spy. The entire crew undergoes questioning, with Lyta present trying to trigger the false personality; it doesn't work. Finally, Talia walks in to talk to Sheridan; Lyta sees her and on a whim tries to trigger the personality. To everyone's shock, it works! Talia becomes Dark Talia, totally loyal to Psi Corps. Sheridan locks her up and demands Psi Corps remove her from the station, which they do. Later, when Bester visits the station during Season 3, he mentions to Garibaldi that Talia had been killed and dissected to try to determine the cause of the increased mind powers she received from Ironheart during the episode "Mind War".

End of spoiler!

Congratulations!

Colorado wouldn't be bad at all! When do you think you'll hear back from the others?

Within the next two to four weeks. Should hear from everyone by mid-March.

Colorado would be nice. The stipend they're offering would be even nicer. Wanna move to Colorado?

> Mmm, maybe. I could even see some interesting story about, say, Elrond explaining to his wife that he's left their daughter back behind in Middle-Earth.... hehehe... or similar stories.

Hmm, that might be an interesting story. Elrond walks up to his wife and first tries to set a good mood by handing her a ring of power as a Valentine's Day present. Then while she's admiring the ring he adds, "Um, by the way, honey, there's some good news and some bad news. The good news is, we have grandchildren! The bad news is. . ."

Looking at Appendices A and B of "Return of the King" sometimes gives me ideas for stories. I thought it was kind of cool how the story about Durin's Folk set the background for "The Hobbit" as well as the Moria scene in LoTR; I think an expansion of Moria's history would be interesting. I also sometimes wonder about the pre-"Hobbit" history of the Shire and Arnor Tolkien sometimes alludes to, like when the Witch-King of Angmar invaded Arnor, or when Bullroarer Took charged the goblins in the Battle of the Green Fields. And then there's the part in "The Hobbit" where Gandalf mentions he has something else to do and takes off, and later it turns out he had a whole 'nother major adventure battling Sauron at Dol Guldur while Bilbo and Co. were travelling through Mirkwood; I always wonder exactly what happened there! There's a lot of little allusions like that I wonder about. I guess it's not so much fan fic I have in mind as that I wish Tolkien had expanded these little hints into stories, so my mind can't help wondering what happened and trying to fill in the blanks :)

Fort Collins, which, I have been told by people who have been there, is a VEY nice college town.

I hope!

I can be happy, and educated, at any of these schools. I learned from Heinlein that it's not the school, it's the student, which is the important factor. But I would like to go to a good school.

Still, Colorado State has some interesting looking stuff... would be a nice enviroment... and my game plan would be to transfer up in two years.

> I laughed uncontrollably at the Yoda/Saruman smack down...

LOL! Now I have an image of Yoda and Saruman fighting for the WWE heavyweight title at the Royal Rumble :) Also have the lyrics to Weird Al's "Yoda" going through my head. To the tune of the Kinks' "Lola":

I met him on a swamp down on Dagobah
Where it bubbles all the time like a giant carbonated soda
S-O-D-A, soda
I saw the little runt sitting there on a log
I asked him his name and in a raspy voice, he said, "Yoda"
Y-O-D-A, Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

Well, I've been around, but I ain't ever seen
A guy who looks like a muppet but he's wrinkled and green
Oh, my Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
Well, I'm not dumb, but I can't understand
How he can lift me in the air just by raising his hand
Oh, my Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

Well, I left home just a week before
And I've never ever been a Jedi before
But Obi-Wan, he set me straight, of course
He said, "Go to Yoda and he'll show you the Force!"
Well, I'm not the kind that would argue with Ben
So it looks like I'm gonna start all over again with my Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
So I used the Force
I lifted a box
I lifted some rocks
Well, I stood on my head
But I won't forget what Yoda said

He said, "Luke, stay away from the darker side
"And if you start to go astray, let the Force be your giude."
Oh, my Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
"I know Darth Vader's really got you annoyed,
"But remember, if you kill him then you'll be unemployed."
Oh, my Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

Well, I heard my friends really got in a mess
So I'm gonna have to leave Yoda, I guess
But I know I'll be coming back some day
I'll be playing this part 'til I'm old and gray
A lifetime contract I have signed
And I'll be making these movies until the end of time with my Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

For some reason when I look at this picture I feel like there should be a "separated at birth" caption mentioning some Democratic politician, but I can't think of who it reminds me of. Dennis Miller put up a picture of Gollum and called it Dennis Kuchinich the other day, but that's not who I'm thinking of. Maybe it's Nancy Pelosi--the forehead and eyes--hmmm. . .
