The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Did you work out yet, young missy?

I'm having dinner...lovely vegetables and beef with garlic, ginger, sesame seeds and soy sauce.

Killer catfish.

He thought he was just out fishing for fun.
He stood chest deep in the placid waters, bait ready, and relaxing.
His friends were laughing at something over to his left.
He never oticed the slight rippling of the water in front of him.
And as he turned to see what his friends were up to, the biggest catfish he'd ever seen leaped from the water and dragged him to the bottom.
The last anyone saw of him was the photo his friends took as he feel backwards, a somewhat long suffering look frozen on his face, forever in celluloid.

Yes, I did! I didn't wait quite long enough after dinner, though, urgh. But I did my intervals!

Told the boss that next week he'd better book us a hotel with a workout room...

> How's that?

Good answer! It's challenging to write an impromptu autobiography, isn't it?--LOL!

I envy you your homeschooling. Homeschooling would've been good for me. Both of my parents were teachers, so I started reading young, with the result that school bored the heck out of me. I always wish I would've been homeschooled, and am a big advocate of it.

On the dragon thing, I was at the library today and found a copy of this neat-looking book by Montse Sant, Dragons. Have you read it?

I'd have to think about whether I think Silmarillion is better than LOTR. There are some things I like about each. The historical scope of Silmarillion is awesome, and there are some great scenes in it--one of my favorites is Huan's battle with Sauron. On the other hand LOTR is a great story with some unsurpassed characters and settings. And then there's always The Hobbit, which was my introduction to the series and was what really got me into it. So trying to decide which one is best puts me in a dilemma--LOL! I've gotta think about that one some more. Meanwhile I guess I'll cast a primary vote for Farmer Giles of Ham--ROFL!

I love having been homeschooled. It did wonders for me. I read hundreds of books a year, and learned at my pace, and developed good writing skills. If I have kids, they'll be homeschooled.

I have never heard of the book you mentioned. Could you describe it briefly, or should I google it?

One thing I didn't mention is that I'm Christian, and a Calvinist Presbyterian to boot though we talk about denominational divisions much around here. I've been in a very liturgical church for the past two years and I know it's affecting my writing, subtly, I just don't know how.

Farmer Giles, LOL!

The Minnesota Vikings win the Super Bowl.

The Minnesota Vikings win the Super Bowl.

At least the Vikings aren't permanent bottom-dwellers, like the Lions.

Sant's book is an overall survey of dragon lore divided into two major sections. The first goes through various characteristics of dragons--psychological, physiological, magical, etc. The second summaries some major dragon legends from different traditions, culminating with sections on Tolkien and Le Guin's dragons. It has beautiful illustrations by an artist named Ciruelo.

I try to avoid getting into denominational divisions online in mixed denominational company :) But since you mention Calvinism, I will mention that one thing I've done is a comparative study of ideas about predestination in Aquinas and Calvin, which I found very interesting. Anyway, how do you find church affecting your writing?--sounds intriguing.
