The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Pic of the tug pullin' out up at the beach house. Said somethin' like "Hey - will you watch my barge for me?" He won't be back till the job is done.

I will go up there tomorrow to watch the real work start.... assuming they can get that Cat fixed!

I am uploading photos of my doilies now so you can see the tea staining effect. I will say that there are still some browner spots on them. But, I live with that cause they aren't really "off" and I think it is okay with the antique look. I can see them in the photos and I think you will be able to tell what I'm talking about.

Yeah, I'd look forward to seeing what your thoughts on "Lost Tales" are when you get a chance to go through it. Meanwhile maybe I'll write up some of what I've got so far on "Silmarillion" and see what you think.

On Norse legends, I was first exposed to them by a really neat children's book called "D'Aulaire's Norse Gods and Giants". Wonderful illustrations in a very unique style--really a one-of-a-kind book. Unfortunately it's out of print now and used copies are expensive:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0385236921/002-2284777-8884841?v=glance

However they do have a companion volume on Greek myth which is still in print. Anyone who has kids, I'd recommend it. BTW, I'm of Norweigian descent on my father's side and also come from a heavily-Norse area; right now I'm in the Green Bay area.

Good luck on the textbook review! Your course actually sounds like something I could use! I like to draw and I want to improve my illustrations so I can illustrate my own books. The way they teach drawing in drafting class seems to be one of the quicker ways to improve drawing skills, I've heard.

Uncle Lynn is a Cat doctor. Been working on Catapillars since 1963. You want I should send him up there? (maybe i could pack myself in his luggage)

Oh, that's my uncle the judge too... you know, rural area, multitasking. This is the one who's house I stay at now. The ones who kept Smeagol for entmoot and all... aunt who had the heart attack.

> I have a good idea of how you feel about that frustration from a different standpoint.

Sounds like you know where I'm coming from on that. Here's another horror story along those lines. My Mom's a teacher, and during the last year or so before her retirement the payroll office habitualy screwed up everyone's payroll records, sometimes depositing payments twice and then withdrawing them twice after the error was caught a few days later, and sometimes not depositing them at all. For a while for every two weeks every time she got a paycheck she had to go back to work on her day off to straighten it out, and she was constantly worried that her checking account would bounce because of their errors. I guess schools and paperwork don't mix!!!

I have another suggestion on the dresses. This one may be *way* off base. But, my wedding dress when I married Dennis was a sorta old dress. My grandfather bought it for me in about 1970 so I wanted to wear it for sentimental reasons. When purchased it was white sheer fabric with a very small raised flower print and it reached the floor. However, I had grown taller and it wasn't long enough - and the whole dress had turned color.

Because of the sheer fabric I had to wear something under it but everything looked really bad - white or beige things looked really bad. And I needed something under that would come a little longer than the dress to make the skirt appear to be the right length. I ended up making a slip with white cotton fabric to go under and tea stained a little at a time to get it the right color.

So, I didn't do anything to the dress.... it stays stored in a sealed bag all the time... but I created the right thing to go under it to make it look right. I was told it was very impressive. I'd post a photo of that too but the scanner isn't hooked up right now.

Evening Hair; woohoo, the barge and rocks, been waiting to see that operation. Thanks for the pics. btw, glad all your permits are in order, kinda hard to hide the barge when the white pickup guys (COE) start cruising. :-)

That is a good idea.... I would use parts of her dress if there is a good way to do it.... There is a good full skirt, but I'll never fit into the bodice.

Indeed! - it is harder to sneak this in than building an unpermitted shed out back.

Okay, doilie #1. You can slightly see a brown spot just to the lower right of the center of this.

Doilie #2 has more brown spots.. above center both right and left.

#3... okay, this is a different style. Due to the ruffles you can hardly see any variation in color in what used to be white. But, this one had a pink border on the white and I'm showing this because you can even see that the light tea staining worked well with the pink edging. The vase sits in the middle - which is a cotton weave because there is a spot there... but, I always keep something sitting there so no one ever sees that.

These items are in my dining area all the time. Though they have some minor discolorations I feel like they look nice enough and since they were made by a great great aunt they are valuable to me. I like having them out to enjoy rather than keeping them hidden away.

I was very tickled several years ago to discover that the little library in the town near where I lived had a good collection of books on Norse legends and myths. Because I knew Tolkien used those I checked out and read every book in that library on the subject. I don't remember it all because that was about 18 years ago but it was really fun reading. I don't think all the Norse residents there realized what a treasure trove they had in that little library that would be difficult to find anywhere else.... and the funny thing was, this library only had a very few books... just a small town, but they had a cool Norse collection.

No, schools and paperwork don't mix! I've had my paychecks double deposited! But, they made me write 'em a check back for the amount!!!

JenB; well that is a pain in the *ss. Amazing that all these years, the colleges still manage to mess up like they did in the 'first age'.

You've been given some good advice, assemble a good case and present it in a calm rational manner. As tempting as it may be to 'ring their chimes' after wards, again the advice is not too. You'll be surprised how often you'll need certified transcripts in your professional career. You don't need someome messing with them (and they can easier now than 'way back when')

Besides you can fun in later years, slowly feeding the 'alumni letters' through a paper shredder. :-)

Oh man! I really wish I was close enough to help you with this. If the skirt would work we could make you a new bodice that would match and be lovely.

Lemme ask you though.... are you planning to wear a wedding dress? I thought you too were wearing shorts and Hawaiian shirt. You see, I have an extra wedding dress here. I think the size is 16 or 18. Not mine... I ended up with it because of someone else's divorce.

Ahhh.... - more pics Dad just sent... and his email description...

RE: Perspectives:

They've left for the day. Broke a gear in the claw while trying to set up the first ramp. On the VCR tape you can see the leaked gear oil or hydraulic fluid on the ramp as he swung away. This shut them down until it gets fixed which Brian says will happen in the morning - take about an hour to fix. I taped the arrival without moving, pausing or stopping the tape and it came out good, though the sound didn't pick up as well as I thought it would. Little too far away for the microphone. But it's a good tape that shows them pulling in, positioning and re-positioning in actual uninterrupted flow.

Too bad it was such a dark gloomy day - shows in the pics. The more distant I got the darker they got and not worth sending. Also, the tide kept me from getting shots from Evelyn's side.

From the distance of the boathouse the rocks look different than they did up close in the quarry. A big difference is they were dry in the quarry and now they're wet - and much darker looking wet than dry. Anxious to see them up close and in place.

While they were fiddling with the broken claw I disconnected the section of the walkway that has to be moved out of the way. With any luck it's ready to be lifted out unless I missed something.

More tomorrow... bust a little concrete... toss a few rocks around...

~The Dad

I am planning on wearing a wedding dress.... ecurbh and I will look like a bride and groom.... just not too fancy. It is the attendants and guests that will be in Hawaiian shirts!

I am looking for a simple dress with not too much fru fru skirting that would be a mess in no time at the beach.

I like this Hawaiian dress, sortof hobbity and nice.

Nani Hawaiian Wedding Dress

As wedding dresses go.... it's cheap!

My desire is for a simple but nice dress... not too expensive, as flattering as it can be on a hobbit body; I reall don't like sleeveless dresses, but don't really want long sleeves in the summer either.
