The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Actually, maybe this is something you'd know about, Rose...though I hate to bug you!

I have an Inspiron 8100, couple years old. It's a great laptop for the most part, BUT when the fan comes on (which it does normally within fifteen minutes or so if you start anything graphics intensive, like a movie), the whole system slows down, it drops frames, and sometimes the sound goes out of sync. Is there anything I can change JUST while watching movies to fix it?

As it is, I just shut the thing down, wait a few minutes, turn it back on and fast forward to where we left off...but that gets highly irritating when trying to watch a long movie.

Good morning everyone, and Welcome to the Hobbit Hole Fedora!

Today is a day I am not even sure what is going to happen.... The bulkhead guys may be coming, but I also am 'sposed to go down and visit with my friend Kay tonight, who is recovering from foot surgery. There will be busy-ness, that is all I know!

I hate geocities. *shudder* Too many pop-up ads and such.

Jim has 10MB that he isn't using. And it wouldn't hurt to look into what additional space would cost.

Got this email from my friend Celeste!! Maj. Wes is Celeste's husband Andrew's brother. He's in Afghanistan. The "Chris" Celeste refers to is the Chaplain.

Kim,
I received this email from Wesley. Don't be surprised by the brevity his email. That's just Wesley. I'm also sure he has very little access to the computer. Notice he didn't say how he was doing or anything. That is the entire email. We'll probably never get newsy emails like we received from Chris, but I know he greatly appreciates your package. Andrew and I also appreciate your support and the support of the Hobbit Hole for Wesley, Chris and all the other military men and women serving our country. Keep up the good work. This side of heaven you may never know the positive effect you have had on those you have never even met.
Celeste

Please tell your Hobbit Hole friends I received the care package and the knife. Please thank them for me, both for the package and their support.

Wes

Talking about laptops... I'm having terrible trouble getting my order straight with Dell. For whatever reason, they've cancelled my order. Now I get to spend twenty minutes yelling at them later today...

Oh Fedora! Those things you are reading are very exciting to me! I'd like to know more!

Unfortunately, right now, I'm buried in textbooks I have to review for work... and Tolkien is not in the stack right now. But, I was in the middle of the Silmarillion for the umpteenth time in preparation for reading the Book of Lost Tales immediately afterward cause I was wanting to outline comparisons. But, with the textbooks, I think that plan fizzled.

Morning all! I'm back.

I want to thank all of you for your prayers and kind words, they were truly a comfort to me and my family and we're grateful. (I'll just skip trying to list everyone in the TO line- since there were so many I'm bound to forget someone.)

My heart is so full I could write a book- lucky for you I don't know where to start. Someday a memoir or journal will come of this experience.

My father passed away in the wee hours of the 8th. It was fast, it was quiet, it was peaceful, and it was a blessed release. He had been living with weakend heart/lungs for over a decade and every respriatory infection as potentially fatal. His heart/lung capacity was severely diminished with every infection he survived. When the doctors finally admitted that there was no recovering from this one, that the rest of his body was shutting down too, they signed an order for hospice. That was the day my brother and I arrived.

That very day he roused himself, sat up, took some water, and we visited, shared memories and some laughs. We learned later that this is a normal part of the death process- a surge of spiritual energy for final goodbyes. We are so blessed to have had that time together. As the rest of the family gathered the next day he slipped into unconsciousness and then later on in the night when just mom was there he passed on.

I cannot praise hospice enough. They turned a heartbreaking nightmare into a beautiful thing. They taught us about death and grief- the process, what to look for, and what is normal. They gave us a place to gather and stay- and it was quiet. No buzzers, beeps or alarms. No "visiting hours". The nurses were unobtrusive and calm and tender. It was so unhospital-like. And when he was gone, they didn't hurry us out of the room.

This is how passing should be. A time of family, faith and peace. We were so blessed and I am overwhelmed with gratitude.

The days that are followed are a blur- with arrangements, the memorial, visitors, many many trips to and from the airport for spouses and family. We celebrated the memory of a great man- from a generation unlike any other. I'm missing him an awful lot and probably will for a very long time. But the dominant emotion right now is thanksgiving.

I've written waaaay to much here, so I'll close by thanking you once again for the kind thoughts and prayers. Y'all are the best.

I swear, some people are so lazy or stupid they can't remember their passwords.

You know, hearing this... well, I guess it's normal. We got all ya'll support type people here so I guess ya'll are used to that. I always hate to have to call our IT guy over to my campus even though he enjoys coming over and is a friend. He's always telling me those hilarious horror stories of why people call him for help. Forgotten passwords is usually one of his pet peeves. And it just baffles me! LOL

I just keep thinking how scary it is that people who teach in colleges are so dense. But, then, people in the medical profession that forgetful! YIKES!!!
