The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I helped my uncle build a lot of his Heath stuff. I don't honestly remember whether the computer was one of them. It might have been, but all I remember was hours and hours of soldering on circuit boards that I don't remember what they were for.
I did end up playing with the Heath computer for many many hours though. It was an awful long time ago, and to be honest I don't even remember what O/S the thing used. I mainly remember that loading EVERYTHING off the stinkin' panasonic tape recorder took fargin' forever.

Okay, you win! But what's the oldest computer you ever actaully used as a computer?IBM 1401, as a high school junior in 1964. The 360 was just a set of posters then. I needed to do some number-crunching for my science project, and IBM gave me time on weekends.
I started out writing the program in assembler, until someone came by, wondered why I was despondent, and introduced me to Fortran.
The school felt there were no really worthy projects to send on to the big-time Metro Detroit Science Fair, but thought mine was the best of a mediocre bunch. It won first prize in the math division, and might have won best-in-show, except I was on the junior class trip, and couldn't be present for the judging.

Heathkit huh? They have the coolest HAM radio stuff! No ham shack is complete without some.
Elecraft is becoming the next Heath. Great radio!

They (the family) took the case out of Pierce Co. yesterday -- a couple of months after they had specifically moved to have the case heard in Pierce Co. (it had originally been in Fed court in Seattle). Now it's in King Co. -- or back in King Co. I should say (They decided they didn't like the Pierce judge).
They're looking a bit desperate.

I almost forgot my station clock. I built it ~25 years ago. I believe I got it for my 13th birthday.
It set to (almost) Zulu.

A straight key is not something I'm converant with. The paddles work much better.
