The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

That's what I think, though...it's not the way it "should" be imo.

I see the guys getting together, working on their achievements together. Instead, they get together, work on a craft, eat a snack and get their "assignment" to finish at home. We did progress at the same rate that way, though...so when one boy got a red bead, they pretty much all did (if you did what the lady said).

I wish there was more Dad involvement too, and this lady set up where one Sat a month the boys go on a field trip with their dads...that is where they went this last Sat...to the firestation.

So as irritated as I get with the lady, I really do think she is trying to address the problems.

And really, with all our help, she organized a stunning Blue and Gold banquet last night! When Matthew got rank pin, Joshua just burst into tears with pride. LOL He's very emotional.

I don't understand it personally...they make me go "rough it" camping for the Mom and Me Campout (which I can do but still) and they have Steve bake a CAKE with him!

Come on! Does that make sense, I ask you?

Maybe there will be more Dad involvement as he gets into Webelos and Scouts? Like I said, with the local troops / packs, the Moms did a lot more with the Cubs...and then the men pretty much took over as the boys got older. Which makes sense, IMO. But now...though the Scoutmaster is a guy (has to be, I think...), many, many more of the helpers are women, and there are mothers who actually go to campouts with their sons each time, which I think is silly!

I've got nothing against mothers, mind you...I just think it's good for boys to have some male bonding time! Help 'em grow up to be real MEN. ;-)

That's what I hope. But I imagine it'll be me doing all the work again next year, for his first year of Webelos. Then Steve should graduate and be able to do his second year.

Oh joy...next year I'll have a Webelo and a Tiger. LOL

I was pretty lonely a lot of the time when I was a young teenager...my brothers had scouts, but by that time most of the girls I knew got wayyyy into boys - and not as just people to hang out and play stuff with. And clothes and makeup and boy bands and...well, I just didn't have anything in common with 'em!

You can apply exactly the same words to me... I had one good friend, who was a guy, when I was a young teenager. And then when I was sixteen I found the Internet and I met my first female friend. I just wish I had RL friends, even now.

No wonder they're called blue northers!

Makes me think of one of my favorite Judy Collins songs, "Someday Soon".

They showed the movie trailer in our church this last Sunday. It was stunning. Just the trailer left me aghast.

I gotta go...take Joshua to school and drop Matthew off at Mom's then it's off to the beauty college!

I just wish I had RL friends, even now.

Same here! I've had a few close friends over the years, but only a few. On the other hand, sometimes I think those are the sort of friendships that are the most meaningful...I'd rather have a few of that sort than any number of superficial friends. But it's been awhile since I had a friend like that. Now they're all far away, and the single ones are married now and have completely different lives. I miss 'em...but I'm glad I had 'em.

It's hard, having friends I don't get to do stuff with. I have people, like you, who I'd love to go to the bookstore with, or see movies with, but I can't because they're internet friends.

Webelos is fun cause the boys get to do some fun stuff for their pins (which they get instead of badges, like Boy Scouts). It is more work, but it is mostly stuff that can be done at home, especially since you're homeschooling! A lot of it can be blended into Matthew's studies and field trips. There will be some things that Steve would probably be more comfortable doing, like the woodworking etc. At this age, the men tend to get more involved in specific things needed for the pins. SSQ taught the boys about tool safety, and for their Woodworking Pin, guided them in building a tool box and I designed a Snowman Measuring Stick for them to put in their yards. They cut it out and painted it. We have ours in the front yard right now! I'll have to get a picture of it, cause it's really cute!

I was a Den Leader for Joseph from Wolf all the way thru Webelos and now I'm on the Boy Scout Troop Committee and am the Charter Organization Representative for the troop. Our Parish has the Charter.

Joseph has been making noises about not wanting to continue because he just doesn't like most of the boys in his patrol. They're big into the camping and sports, and he's just NOT. But on the other hand, he'd like to go on for an Eagle, so I think he'll stay to get that work done. Our #1 son is an Eagle, but #2 son wasn't intersted in Scouts AT ALL.

This is why we need a Hobbit Holer compound...

Or at least have VERY frequent moots!
