The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

They have my prayers, Suzi...I saw the thread on it yesterday, was interested, since my best and oldest friend is a surgeon.

Kind of reminds me of Rush risking everything the same way.

Yes, I've had several pillows since it happened...I might could try elevating my head, but I think barring sitting straight up, I don't think it'd make any difference.

Still...what's a buckwheat pillow???

I'm afraid if I had a buckwheat pillow, I'd dream of pancakes all night! LOL

Good morning! Checking in late...it's been a busy morning so far.

I have to take cat #3 (Cleo) go to the vet this afternoon...stressing about that. She has a lump on her underside...probably should have taken her in a month ago, but she hasn't been in any discomfort, so I've put it off. If it ends up being something that requires a lot of care and a lot of money, I'm not sure what I'll do. So I'm worrying.

*fret*

Hullo all! - I had a lot of catching up to do... since I hadn't posted since before yesterday!

Penny.... when you left the window open at work did you never refresh it? - So they are just clocking how long Explorer is open?

Ramius.... all I can say is ~Doh!~

I used to fret about lumps, taken a lot of dogs and cats in for lumps and never had one that was any more than a fatty cyst that older animals (and people) get.

Big clue... can you stick your fingers all the way under the lump without a lot of connecting tissues? and does it move freely like it is only connected to the skin? If both of those are yes, I wouldn't even say you ~need~ to spend the money for the check.

Also, has it grown significantly since you first felt it a month ago?

Bad tumors are connected firm to the muscle mass with lots of tissues and a blood supply.

How many cats do you have? We had two growing up, and I took care of one for someone else for a while but ended up keeping him for 8 years :) I had to take him to the vet once, so I know how the worrying goes.

Yes to both of these...but it has grown a lot - at first it was barely noticeable. So I'm worried. I guess it'll have to come off...but I'm hoping it's something very simple.

She IS a bit old - nine or ten. So hopefully that's the case? Or should I be worried since it's grown fairly quickly?

At this point I have three...which is really one more than I feel comfortable with, being a single gal and all. Don't wanna become one o' them "cat ladies". ;-)

First one is a Siamese named Tamino, Tam for short. (He and Halvah are both on my profile page). I bought him shortly after I got out of the military...had always wanted a Siamese and finally got my wish. I didn't know what I was wishing for, though...he's still my favorite if I HAD to choose, but VEY demanding and vocal. He loves Tuesday nights now...all those guests to pet him and hold him and fuss over him!

Halvah is a Himalayan / Siamese cross that Mom showed up with one day. Came to my work and said she had something to show me. She was very apologetic but said she just HAD to get her, and wouldn't she be a great playmate for Tam? She was...until she grew up and he didn't. Now he plays mostly with Fiona, though Halvah has her playful days. She's a hoot because, unlike Tam, she tries to be very dignified, and also unlike Tam, she's a total klutz!

Cleo is a Siamese mix that belonged to a girl who went away to college. Someone who knew me from work and knew that I like Siamese types called and asked if I'd be willing to take her. I agreed somewhat reluctantly, but she's a very sweet cat. Psycho, though. I don't know her whole past or whether she's always been like this, but the slightest sound can send her into a panic. She had her front claws removed at some point (something I wouldn't do to mine...but that's another subject), but in her case, that may be a good thing as she'd be likely to hurt someone BAD in a panic. Crazy cat...

If it is just a fatty cyst, it wouldn't even need to come off unless you ~had~ to put her under anesthesia for some other procedure, like a tooth cleaning. They don't hurt anything, as a rule, unless they grow too big for their blood supply, in which case they die and become infected. But that is later on, not an imminant risk.

I took some off Zulu and Logan in their middle age simply for vanity if they were in a spot, like their necks, where they were pet often and I could feel it.

Logan had probably 10 marble-sized lumps by the time he died. Most of his didn't grow beyond the size of a large marble. Zulu had fewer, but bigger ones. She had one on her belly that I wanted to remove because it grew to the size of a racquetball - No kidding. But it was not a malignancy, so in her declining condition, the anesthesia was more of a risk. Some critters just are prone to getting lumps in their old age and you could spend all your time removing them if cost were no barrier and the critter handles anesthesia well.

I guess it is good to have this first one checked out, especially if you have some other business she needs, like shots. They will do a needle-aspiration into the lump and look at a slide of what's in there. If it is just a fatty lump, at least you will know more if/when she gets the next one. But I know money is also a big issue, so if you want to wait and see, it would be my bet there would be no harm done.

Yeah, I think the same. I don't know exactly what shots she is out of date on, so I should do those, too. Dad lent me a little money, and since this is one of the things that is really preying on my mind, I wanted to at least have the checkup.

But what you've said has made me feel much better. I'm glad I posted, though I wasn't sure if I should. Lumps on cats are not exactly something most people wanna think about, let alone discuss. ;-)

It's almost the size of a golf ball, though...or at least a big marble. Still feels loose under the skin, though, so cyst sounds right. And she certainly seems in fine health otherwise...happy and alert and eating fine.
