The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Dark elevators are spooky. I saw enough dark, spooky elevators in one hospital I did Y2K work at. The hospital had expanded in stages, and wings were added at odd angles, and eventually joined to form a sort-of hollow square. Most elevators were small, and tucked away in odd alcoves off the hallways. The basement was dark and gloomy, and there were other elevators that that had been abandoned, with the openings bricked-up and covered over on the upper floors.
The place was weird in other ways, too. On an upper floor, a proposed operating room would take the entire width of the building, forcing people to walk all the way around the hollow square to get from one side to the other. So, just before the OR, they knocked a hole in the wall on the courtyard side, built a parapet along the wall, and then entered the building again just past the OR. You're walking along, the make this turn, and you're eight floors up with just a handrail and some windows one one side, with brick wall on the other.
I have elevators and escalators in dreams, too. But they're usually super-deluxe models, or totally weird, like split-level elevator cars that also run horizontally, and along the outside surface of the building.
Sometimes my weirdest dreams end too soon for me to make sense of. The other night, I was in some sort of jeep-like vehicle with other guys, driving down a long lane of trees in some sort of semi-arid country. We get out, and sit in grandstands that face a field about the size of a football field, but it's surrounded by a 20-ft-tall chain link fence. There's a few guys walking around in the field, and a couple of things on the ground.
I'm starting to get curious about what's going to happen, when I notice that everyone else is in some sort of military camouflage, and they don't look like nice guys. So what's going to happen on the field, and what am I suppposed to be doing there? That's when the alarm went off.
If the situation had turned dicey, I'm sure my subconscious would have made sure I was heavily armed. Even in my worst nightmares, I manage to come up with enough firepower to at least break even.

I manage to come up with enough firepower to at least break even. ...and that's what matters, in the final analysis. :-)

Have you seen all the crap that's happening at Disney lately? Looks like Eisner is on the way out.
I just wish Roy Disney was interested in running the outfit. I think he gets it. I don't know why he isn't ever among the top few for new CEO. He's still the biggest shareholder. I guess he doesn't want the job.
I met Roy Disney once, and I didn't even know who he was at the time. He bought me a beer.
My ship was in port in Cabo San Lucas. We were doing security for the San Diego Yacht Club sailboat race down to CSL and back. Hundreds of boats involved. Disney's boat was called "Pyewacket" and it was easy to spot in the field with a big spinnaker with a big mouse on it. (Note: the name of the boat comes from the name of the cat in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks").
I ended up one night down at the bar (imagine that) at the Del Sol hotel. It's one of those on-beach-thatched-hut type arrangements. I'm sitting at the bar with some old guy who finds out I'm a coastie. He sails. He buys me beers. We talk for a long time about sailing and coastie sea stories and stuff.
He leaves later, and bartender says... "you know who you were talking to?"
"No" I say.
"That was Roy Disney". He says. and... my tab was paid.
Just damn.

Got any spare hugs? Yah. I think I have a couple of them around here somewhere... :-)
To: Ramius
Wow! That is way cool sugar!
I haven't heard the current round of stuff about Disney. But, with Eisner were already out. Needs to happen.
I think I need to be in one of those thatched-hut-on-the-beach places about now! Would be a lot better than where I am! :-D
