The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I'd go in the water in August, no problem ;-)

The "wimps" was tongue-in-cheek. Though the water was VEY nice. Even if you don't believe me.

Heh! No way you'll go in the water darlin' I'm stickin' ya out in the woods without any way to cool off. You like to go around here makin' nasty comments to everyone about everything and then talk about how you were funnin'. But, you know, you just get ugly about it and hurt a lot of people's feelings. Ruthy didn't say nothin' to you to deserve you sayin' somethin' ugly. You need to learn to watch your mouth and be nice.

That was ugly? Good heavens, I didn't think anyone here was thin-skinned! Wow, if I offended anyone, I'm sorry, but it sure as heck wasn't meant to be mean. I was trying to make a point about how differently we viewed the water; us poor freezing northerners couldn't wait to get in, while you guys who have warmer weather weren't as eager.

I was amazed that in three hours travel time, I could go from -10 degree windchills to 75 degree weather. Of course I wanted to go in the water, and of course it was too cold for people who live there.

And I know how to plan my vacations, no way I'd travel that far south in August. I don't wear shorts...

Psychologically interesting can be good, too :) There's of course a lot of psychological tension inherent in a guy meeting a girl, so if you focus on the inner and outer conflicts involved there you could get some "psychological action" out of that. How long does the party scene go on before there's any psychological/social conflict or physical action? Most authors I've read on this do advise to spend a few paragraphs/pages at the beginning setting the scene before the action intervenes, because in order for the action to be meaningful the audience needs to know what the characters' "status quo" is so they know what's at stake when the crisis intervenes to threaten the status quo. So spending a bit at the beginning to set the stage can work, as long as it serves the function of setting up the first crisis scene by establishing the setting/characters, and as long as it doesn't develop towards the crisis too slowly to maintain reader interest.

On the first appearance of the bad guy, Bickham's book advises to introduce the bad guy in Chapter 2 after introducing the hero and the plot crisis in Chapter 1. Of course if you don't plan to reveal that the bad guy is bad until later that complicates things :) In that case what you might do after introducing the hero is to introduce, not the bad guy per se, but the effects of the bad guy's plotting on the hero--in other words, let us see that there are forces in the story plotting against the hero, even if we don't know who's behind those forces yet. That's one suggestion you might consider, anyway--of course there's more than one way to do these things, I'm just brainstorming ideas here without having looked at the story yet.

Maybe, if you're willing, I'll send you the first three chapters (which are in rough draft form, finished - sort of - but not polished) and you can look at it... I have three viewpoint characters and they take turns with the chapters. All in third-person, but I needed a couple different perspectives on things.

Heading home, then doing my run, having dinner, and I'll be back. Unless I get banned for meanness.

Pretty good, so far.

I'm sitting her arguing with my daughter about her homework. She uses every excuse in the book. The current excuse is "my back itches".

Well, at least she has an original excuse!--never heard that one before :) Is it a class she doesn't like?

ROFL! If she's already complaining about homework in kindergarten she's ahead of the curve! :) Good luck on getting through the other 4 sentences, LOL!

So what's on your schedule tonight besides supervising homework? :) I'm probably going to watch Smallville and then that new Stephen King series that starts tonight; or else AMC has a couple good SF movies on.

I've finally gotten through 2 of her assignments and now we are working on the third and final assignment - a book report! Heaven help me!

I'll be online a bit and at 8:30 I'll be watching the American Idol results show. There's a 17 year old red head from Illinois who has a voice exactly like Bing Crosby's! I voted for him a few times last night and I'm hoping he makes it through!

What time and channel does that Stephen King show come on?

Glad to hear you're making progress in your homework--I mean, your daughter's homework, LOL! What book is the report on?

Bing Crosby is one of my favorite singers--the kid on American Idol has taste :)

The Stephen King show is on ABC at 8 CST--don't know what time that is by you, but it starts at 8 here.

Evening; very nice sword, couldn't figure out what the reference was; still edged weaponery is always appropriate.

Hey Fedora - got your email - I love de Camp and Pratt's work! "Compleat Enchanter" was a favorite of mine for years, and when I finally found "Wall of Serpents", I did a little dance in the used bookstore
