The Hobbit Hole V - Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
ecurbh

Posted on 12/11/2003 2:07:57 PM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

And dragons are supposed to have scales, not fur.

Good idea! We just finished off the chilli. Mighty fine if I do say so myself- it had some unusual ingredients and made for a very full-bodied flavor. And no GI distress to boot.

Incidentally, I'm about to go to choir. I won't be home until 10 so I'm leaving the computer at this office, where I will be after I go to the client site for eight hours tomorrow. So, I'll see everyone tomorrow evening. Probably.

I just examined the pork...it's awesome, that is all I can say. It has a very pleasant scent...fresh and tasty, even raw! The ham is huge...takes up the whole bottom of one drawer in our fridge. The chops fill a quart baggie...we're having them for supper.

The ground pork is just plain, so I took out enough to fill my hand and added a bit of sage, some salt and some pepper, formed it into a patty and fried it as an experiment.

It coulda used more sage, imo, but otherwise it was just delicious....I mean totally delicious! No gamey flavor, not too tough...just delicious. The boys smelled it cooking and came running for a free sample! I saved a bite for Steve...

So you're either going to have to eat all those bagels or all that pork real quick?

Seriesly, the pork sounds delicious!

Well, today turned out suprisingly well. It started off miserable. NO heat in the building this morning and heavens was it cold. But around noon, they had it fixed and all was well. We had a grand time in the duration drinking cocoa and coffee, chatting and trying to stay warm.

Then I got to go on a field trip.

Military posts are interesting places- especially old ones. Lots of history tucked into the most obscure corners. And Aberdeen Proving Ground is an old one. Rusted railroad tracks, dilapidated barracks, relics of all sorts. At one point they fired missles and such with reckless abandon- and to this day WWII era munitions turn up on the shore of the bay and in the tributaries near post after every storm. Unexploded stuff. Kinda unnerving. And so much of the post is fenced off: "Keep Out- Unexploded Ordnance". This makes for great wildlife habitat. People can't get in and muck with the frogs and birdies. (They have a heck of a deer season, though).

I have a rotation coming up that is a little more hands on than what I've been doing and I drove out to visit the site which is located out in a remote corner of the post. Really out in the middle of nowhere (Maryland-style nowhere). And it is beautiful- absolutely stunning marshland- the grasses brown with winter, glowing in the late afternoon sun. I imagine there'd be lots of water fowl other times of the year. So very good for the soul. I saw a fox, a couple of deer, the bay, the horizon.... and more than one yellow "tank crossing" sign.

Heh heh heh.

I do love my job.

Your Hobbit Hole pocket knives were mailed today. Some are going to our troops, a couple are for our Hobbit Hole vets. Both are worthy causes.

Remember, every verteran in the Hobbit Hole is entitled to a pocket knife. I'm down to 14 knives on hand right now, and I'm eager to put in another order.

2JM: wild or feral hogs' meat can be delicious, though better meat generally comes from the younger ones.
In MO, there is no restriction on hunting them, no season, sort of shoot on sight. But it does help to know if your neighbor has turned some loose to feed on acorns. Good fences make good neighbors. There is a pretty good wild population down by Fort Lost in the Woods.
