I think Laressa was 2 or 3 when her mother died. She was my Grandmother's older half-sister. My Grandmother's mother died when my Grandmother was about 6. Both of my Great-Grandfather's wives died in childbirth. It is very sad to see how many women died in childbirth in the 1800's.
Laressa also wrote a poem about her father, but I have not typed it into my computer yet.

It is indeed very sad how many mothers died in childbirth - ditto for the babies. It is not unusual to read a family history from back then - where the same name for a son is used many times before one finally survives.
I look forward to her poem on her dad! Thank you for sharing.

Winter morning greetings to FR's Finest!
Good morning all - I have so many threads to catch up on because I've been tied up with a big Dinner & auction for our county Republicans. It is tomorrow and I'm off again right now to work on it. All I can say is I'm glad I'm not the chairperson ;) Look forward to seeing you all this Sunday. Cheers, Libby

Well..
*cough*
I have some sketches from 1938 by both of my grandparents.
Unfortunately, I cannot scan them as the paper is brittle and needs to be archivally treated to be acid free.

"I have some sketches from 1938 by both of my grandparents"
You need to talk to someone about having these treated and then having copies made.
Jkphoto may be able to give you some suggestions. I believe he does photo restoration.
HEY JEFF ... We need You!

Nominated for Quote of the Year is the statement made by Texas Congressman Dick Armey when asked, "If you had been in President Clinton's place, would you have resigned?"
Armey's reply: "If I had been in the president's place I would not have gotten the chance to resign. I would have been lying in a pool of my own blood, looking up, and listening to my wife ask, 'How do you reload this, you son of a b*tch?'"

Very nice. The first line reminds me of my Mom's Mom,
who passed away when my Mom was 4 years old.

Heart Of Stone
Alone this night, as always it seems
Nothing to live for, wondering why I care
Life has been cruel, sometimes mean
And generally a hellish experiences to live.
Why continue with this daily curse
The sun coming up is only misery
A new day brings it's own rewards
Anxiety, worry, and bothersome nervousness.
Which way should I chose to end this life
Shotgun to the head, or knife to the heart
Asphyxiation from my car, live my life in a bar
All these sound exciting, and a welcomed end.
What brought me to this un-welcomed in
Things broken that can not be mend.
A heart destroyed by a loathsome creature
A beautiful woman with a heart of stone.

OKers.
Have more than a few actually.
But the one that is the biggest concern is a nude study on newsprint done by my grandfather.
(The bad news is, it's on newsprint.)
The rest are pencil sketches, watercolors, and pastel.

That's a lovely poem - one of the best I've read about a child's need for a mother. This is a picture of my great-grandmother Saphronia who died within the week after my grandmother's birth in January 1910. I can imagine Grandma Mable having similar feelings.
