In recent conversations with aides and allies, President Trump often interjects with a question about his vice president: Does JD Vance have what it takes to go all the way?
He usually answers his own question: He’s not so sure.
It is not that Mr. Trump is abandoning Mr. Vance. He involves him in major decisions, has given him high-profile opportunities to position himself for 2028 and trusts the 41-year-old vice president to wage partisan warfare on his behalf. In a cabinet meeting this week, Mr. Trump compared Mr. Vance to Eliot Ness, the mob-busting federal agent, for working to ferret out fraud in mostly Democratic controlled states.
Mr. Trump has long conducted running focus groups on his closest aides, and appears to enjoy needling them and keeping them off balance as a way of asserting his dominance. Several people in the president’s inner circle have been subject to his quasi-public questioning of their performance and their future.
But when it comes to Mr. Vance, the stakes are higher. As the default front-runner for the Republican nomination and would-be inheritor of the president’s political movement, Mr. Vance’s fortunes ride to a substantial degree on the enthusiasm of the support he gets from Mr. Trump. And Mr. Trump’s regular polling of people on whether they prefer Mr. Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio has become one of the most closely watched early indicators of how power in the Republican Party might pass to the next generation.

He should fire Vance if he doesn’t publically support him.
“a career politician, Rubio has been selling himself to the highest bidder for his entire adult life.”
Example.... Private prisons used to house illegal aliens made Rubio rich. If the border is open, IMMIGRATION prisons make MONEY.
Not gibberish. Truth.
Sammy is a great vocalist and guitarist. Cherone kills with Extreme.
But….Dave was the greatest frontman ever..warts and all.
Thanks.
gibberish when you apply it to others ...
Even today, as disenchanted and disillusioned as many have become, I still believe that is true, and we can agree on this.
“questions”
How would that tµrd new yawk rag know?
He’s a true conservative visionary."
No, American political conservatives have had only two visionaries in our lifetimes. Reagan and Trump. What DeSantis represents is a conservative who has a proven track record of using the system to pass legislation to enact conservative policies .
It's almost funny coming from the New York Times which wages partisan warfare with pretty much every story.
Pfffft!
NYT.
All this hand-wringing on the Left about whether JD Vance has what it takes - makes one think they fear JD the most.
“Rubio is a telegenic phony. He ran as a TEA Party candidate for his Senate seat, then immediately began pushing for immigration amnesty.”
Hey IDIOT, we’re supposed to (conveniently) forget all of his anti-American positions before Trump made him Secretary of State. Now get with it and say: “Oh Marco, you’re the PERFECT candidate. Oh Marco, I love you!”.
(p.s., I also have a long memory)
Rubio will never get the nomination due to his drug kingpin now real estate agent brother in law. Rubio has never distant himself from Orlando Cicilia, but helped him post prison.
I’ll go for concern for both
Younger conservatives don’t like him because of his association with Palantir. I don’t like him because of that and because I’ve heard the rumors that he was in fact 100% for this Iran war and only pretends otherwise because he knows that position will cost him votes. Rubio is a neocon so he’s unacceptable too. If either one is the Republican candidate then I’m voting Libertarian or just sitting it out.
You are taking this NYT garbage far too
seriously
“A total of 99 senators approved Marco Rubio to be Secretary of State. His nomination was unanimously confirmed with a vote of 99-0 in January 2025.”
That just shows he’s ‘deep state’ approved.
“That just shows he’s ‘deep state’ approved.”
Exactly my point.
“Rubio will never get the nomination due to his drug kingpin now real estate agent brother in law.”
Not to mention living with, owning a house with Rivera who was just convicted ...
Former Florida Congressman David Rivera was convicted on May 1, 2026, of money laundering and illegally lobbying for Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro regime. During the trial, prosecutors alleged Rivera used Rubio as a pawn. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a longtime friend, testified he was completely unaware of Rivera’s illegal foreign lobbying. [1]
Details of the case and Rubio’s involvement:
• The Charges & Conviction: Rivera was found guilty of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and failing to report millions of dollars he received from a $50 million contract with Venezuela’s state-owned oil company. He was remanded to federal custody immediately following the verdict.
• Rubio’s Testimony: Because Rivera attempted to use his longstanding Republican connections to ease U.S. sanctions on Venezuela, Rubio was called to the stand in March 2026. Rubio testified for nearly three hours, confirming he met with Rivera but stating he had absolutely no knowledge that Rivera was secretly working for the Venezuelan government. Rubio is not accused of any crime.
