Teams will show me in my home office as usual. The icon already turns yellow if there has been no keyboard or mouse action in the last 5 minutes. This new feature must be in response to the scripts or applets used to simulate “busyness”.

For much of the last 25 years, I worked from my home office. My static IP address is reported as my router WAN address. That address is registered to my company and customer sites using a white list of acceptable inbound connections. The Teams snitch is a nothing burger. If I'm off my home LAN, I can't connect to the company or customer sites because the originating IP address would not be on the white list.
I retired in June this year, so all of that nonsense is no longer an issue. I haven't set foot in a company building since Sept 2017 on the last trip to San Diego. The company maintained a VPN for access to company resources. That bypassed the originating IP address issue that granted access to a select few servers. The VPN bandwidth was massively increased during COVID and working from home became the normal mode for work that wasn't explicitly in a DoD "closed" area. There was adequate security in authentication, authorization and end-to-end encrypted sessions.

WIFI only? I don’t join any wireless network while in the office just a wired connection. And not sure how Teams knows my building based off of what SSID I join as in our case I could be on our guest network that is isolated from our internal vlan’s and know where in my network design do I have locations defined on the various SSID’s across our 120 locations. In other words this may be a feature IT could help configure but it most likely will not work by default unless somewhere someone sets up the parameters.

My company can already do this now, but they don’t care. More people working from home has allowed them to reduce our owned and leased buildings globally and save a bunch of money. Most of us go in once or twice a week max, unless visitors are in.
