Why the U.S. Air Force Needs 300 (Or More) B-21 Raider Stealth Bombers
National Security Journal ^ | 8/8/2025 | Andrew Latham

Posted on 08/08/2025 9:12:14 AM PDT by whyilovetexas111

The U.S. Air Force’s plan to procure “at least 100” B-21 Raider stealth bombers is dangerously insufficient for an era of simultaneous great-power competition with Russia and China. Credible deterrent and the ability to fight a protracted, two-theater war requires a much larger fleet, in the range of 200 to 400 aircraft.

Short answer No. Better question, why do we have a plan that requires more than we can afford? Revise plan or get the money.

Forget Russia.

They couldn’t take Ukraine expeditiously.

China on the other hand …

We have $180 Trillion in debt and liabilities, so the answer is no.

Rods From God in orbit would likely be cheaper and more effective.

And it’s not even clear to me if the B-21 can carry bunker busters. There seems to be disagreement on that point.

Retarded gaslighting. Missiles are where it’s at. This is just the defense factories that can’t let go of the government nipple.

Insanity. The days of manned aerial combatants in anything resembling a peer conflict is over. Advanced AAA and drone aerial defense probably will make manned operations at acceptable loss ratios essentially impossible in many places, and even where not the ability of drones to fly faster and longer and maneuver harder, with far lower crewing cost is compelling.

There are many ways to lose a power struggle. One way is to not spend enough on your military. Another way is to go bankrupt by spending too much on your military.

It’s a tough balance.

We have around 75 B-52s in service right now, 20 B-2s and 45 B-1s.... Why do we need 300 B-21s?

So we raise taxes to revolution levels, plunge into default, bankrupt America, and let our infrastructure and homeless and helpless fend for themselves to play a COMPETITION Game?

Our national debt interest payments already exceed Defense spending…please, please take the Credit Card away from the fools in charge.

FWIW: The writer belongs to a 'sustainable peace' organization and writes opinion peices for 'The Hill' (he's a lefty).

Some of the other content on the website leans left.

The F-35 and F-22 can fly anywhere they damn well please, with impunity.

Drones are the way of the future and much cheaper to produce. When you’re $37 trillion in debt you need to get a handle on the spending. I’m sure the Defense Dept would love all sorts of expensive toys but they’ve been spending insane amounts of money for decades and yet our enemies have managed to keep up with our technology at a much lower cost.

That’s a lot of investment in one place at risk of being destroyed. Maybe we need them. I am not sure.

I am sure they are also factoring in a future robotic military using drone swarms and the like.

Just how many countries do we need to bomb into the Stone Age?

Perhaps that shouldn’t be our legacy as a nation.

You’ll have to figure in the cost of more Stratotankers too.
