Taco Bell Refuses to Serve English-Speaking Woman

A Florida woman was denied service at a Taco Bell because none of the workers spoke English. Apparently the Chalupa Supreme Combo doesn’t translate South-of-the-border.

Alexandria Montgomery posted a video of the entire incident as it unfolded in the drive-thru of the Taco Bell in Hialeah.

“Nobody here speaks English? Nobody in the back speaks English? So you can’t take my order,” Montgomery said.

At one point another staffer intervened, but that individual claimed not to speak English, too.

“She doesn’t want to help me because she don’t speak English. But you know the menu. You work here, so you would know what I’m talking about if I say I want number six on the menu. You understand what I’m saying? Like, you just don’t completely shut me out cuz you don’t speak English, that’s not fair,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery said Taco Bell later reached out to apologize and offer her a gift card. But perhaps they should be enrolling their staff in an ESL class?

“I understand everyone in Miami doesn’t speak English, and that’s fine, but if she was willing to work with me, I think the outcome would’ve been different,” Montgomery told NBC 6.

In a statement, Taco Bell said that the incident “does not meet our customer experience expectations.”

“We have worked quickly to resolve with the customer to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Taco Bell wrote to NBC 6.

It seems to me that anyone who moves to America and refuses to learn our language should be deported. Without a common language we can’t have a sovereign nation nor can we order the delicious Cheesy Gordita Crunch.

“Más cerveza, por favor” and “Dónde está el baño?” is the only Spanish you need to know.

Figured it had to be Miami. Had a similar thing happen when we tried to eat at a Burger King the day before leaving on a cruise. We were not denied service though. We were shocked and started to wonder about the neighborhood. We do know how to count in Spanish. Between that and pointing, they figured it out. We made minimal effort and were kind about it and got served. There has to be more to the story.

My understanding (or misunderstanding) of dominant languages is that French was the second language to learn, probably well before WWII.

With the US taking the technological lead in aviation and many scientific fields, English had to be learned. American tourism also encouraged other countries to learn English.

English has become somewhat of a universal language except here in America where illegals simply do not want to learn it and blend in with the existing culture. That’s thanks to our democrat communist friends.

Seargent D is coming and yer on his list. As soon as I saw that pic I heard the slow chugging music of the intro to March of the S.O.D.

This isn’t new at all. I lived in Miami for many years. You have to accept the fact that Miami is not really the United States its Cuba 2.0. If you don’t speak Spanish there are places that just won’t serve you.

My friends and I had it happen to us. After sitting being ignored for 10 minutes I finally broke down and called to the waitress in Spanish and had to order for 6 people.

I guess this balances out the times I hung up on belligerent entitled Hispanics demanding, “Espanol! Espanol”!

No. Eff you. Learn the language or go home.

I was sent to Denver (Greenwood Village) for a business trip. The hotel had a parking garage. No in/out privileges. You leave, you pay. I was parked and hungry, so I walked down the hill to the McDonald's. This was March 2000 for a time reference. There was not a single person in that McDonald's that spoke English. The counter had a picture menu to help Spanish illiterates point at what they wanted. Fortunately, I'm not a Spanish illiterate and successfully ordered food.

A few years prior, I had a favorite stop for dinner after skating 20 miles around Miramar Lake. The La Salsa restaurant had wonderful tacos and a great salsa bar. I had been going for dinner for almost 18 months. This evening, the staff decided they would only speak Spanish. I knew they spoke English. I returned the favor by placing my order in Welsh. They looked perplexed. I suggested we conduct the transaction in English because we both speak that language. Order placed, dinner consumed. Play stupid games and expect to get played back.

A few days ahead of Christmas, my father asked me to pick up some salad greens and tomatoes. I went to Von's grocery. As I approached the produce area, a couple women abruptly switched to speaking German. I gathered my greens and tomatoes and said, "Froeliche Weinachten"...Merry Christmas in German. Never assume those around you are unable to understand your conversation if you choose a different language as a method of exclusion.

I enjoy being a polyglot. Lots of time on Duolingo. I'm toying with trying MakesYouFluent in German. Grok3 rates Duolingo high on grammar and structure, but a bit weak on interactive speech.MakesYouFluent gets a better rating than JumpSpeak for German. I haven't spent the time or money on the new AI immersion tools because I'm frankly still putting in long hours for my employer.

Hey. That’s going on here in eastern TN, too. Infuriating!

She was right about them in that they should able to understand which number on the menu to press. Six and seis are close enough, they should have that basic part understood.

You know how after you vote, they give you this little sticker to wear that says “I voted”? Well, here in LA, that sticker has several different languages on it. People who are so illiterate in English that they can’t even understand a simple thing like “I voted”...are voting.

you can’t get a job without being bilingual

My son returned from his tour with the USMC in Iraq and was looking for local work in Mira Mesa. There was an unwritten rule that you needed to be bilingual to get hired in the fast food shops. My son had already put significant effort into Spanish fluency. He got hired. One of his customers was the daughter of a real estate broker. On a lark, both of them took real estate license exams and passed. My son ran with it. He became a broker in San Diego and 80% of his business was with Spanish speakers. He was even included in court proceedings to help Spanish speakers understand the proceedings. Being fluent in Spanish is still paying dividends in his real estate work in Idaho, Montana and California.

“We have worked quickly to resolve with the customer to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Taco Bell wrote to NBC 6. Taco Bell added, “We put up signs saying, “No Spanish, no service.”

I’m old enough to remember when Taco Bell’s menu included a pronunciation guide so customers would know how to say such foreign words as “taco” and “burrito”...

A more civilized age...

They just did not want to serve her, for whatever reason. But trust me they understood her perfectly. Didn’t really matter, they would have gotten her order wrong anyway, English or Spanish.

It’s just the opposite in Europe, where refugees usually do know English but not the native language, so it forces those countries to provide more services in English to accomodate the refugees.

When the war went hot in Ukraine, lots of people exited to safer places. Many ended up in Wales. To the delight of the Welsh, they also embraced learning Welsh. The Welsh have been working to increase the number of speakers, so this was good all around. Although Duolingo is a pretty good way to break the ice in Welsh, there is still nothing better than full immersion in the language and culture. Most people in Wales a fluent in Welsh and English and will instantly switch to English if it is clear that is what you speak.
