During the National Prayer Service for President Donald Trump at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, the Episcopal Bishop delivering her prayer called on Trump to show "mercy" to those "who are scared now," specifically those who identify as LGBTQ or are illegal immigrants. Her service sounded more like a missive for a dying nation than a celebration of a new leader.
The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde called repeatedly for "unity" in America as Trump's term begins, though she seemed to be talking more to Trump directly than to any of his opponents. Budde said that it is "incumbent upon us to speak the truth" as she called for a "commitment to unity that incorporates diversity." Two of Trump's first executive orders eliminated diversity, equity and inclusion programs at the federal level and reversed Biden's gender orders, bringing biological reality and common sense back to policy on women, girls, and education.
"Let me make one final plea, Mr. President," Budde said, "Millions have put their trust in you and as you told the nation yesterday you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.
"There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families, some who fear for their lives," she went on. "And the people, the people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meatpacking plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals, they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues, wadara, and temples. I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away."
"And that you help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome here," Budde went on. "Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers in this land. May God grant us the strength and courage to honor the dignity of every human being, to speak the truth to one another in love and ot walk humbly with one another and out God for the good of all people, for the good of all people in this nation and the world." She concluded with an Amen.
She added in the speech that there has been too much contempt in the country and that disagreements have become too harsh. Budde’s about page describes her as “an advocate and organizer in support of justice concerns, including racial equity, gun violence prevention, immigration reform, the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons, and the care of creation.”
Trump responded to the speech, asking the press, "What did you think?" and added that it was "not too exciting."
In June 2020, Budde previously said, "We need to replace President Trump," amid the George Floyd protests when she was asked what her message to Trump was. The Washington National Cathedral was used for the interfaith event and Budde was chosen as one of the religious figures who would preach to Trump as well as other political figures.
Stand on a tall rock. Look far down on the Bishop. Take aim. Urinate with healthy stream.
LOL! Prolly a regular at Starbucks too.
Who selected her to speak? Bad choice.

Whoever did should be dismissed from his/her position IMMEDIATELY if not sooner!
“They attended because the prayer service is traditional.”

Let’s call it what it was: A liberal lecture disguised as a prayer service.
The National Cathedral is everything that the Leadership Left pretends to hate: thorough integration of church and state.
The National Cathedral of DC is the Establishment religion of our National establishment Elite. The one president buried their— Woodrow Wilson— embodies the messianic vision all of the Cathedral leadership have for American politics. Every Democratic President is a divinely appointed ruler of America. Every Republican President is an evil force of oppression that must be spoken against in the “prophetic voice.”
The National Cathedral is a taxpayer funded institutionalized Church of support for inifinite DC power as imagined by the Democratic Party growing federal government power. All opposition to this faith is deemed evil and will be preached against with ferocity. This is the establishment of religion forbidden in the First Amendment.
IT is in a word: a travesty.
Except by not walking out you are sanctioning this kind of rhetoric.
“Episcopal”
No.
Go to hell.
Tax that “church”.
Why I fled that church and became Catholic.
Episcopal Church is heathen. Does not follow biblical teachings at all.
This is: Perfect demonstration of the worthlessness of cultural relativism.
Was she wearing sensible shoes and driving a Subaru?
I wonder how many Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge CDs she has.
I’m more concerned that said Treasury Secretary worked for Soros not too long ago...
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I’ve never mistrusted President Trump but he has made decisions from time to time, especially personnel decisions, that are incomprehensible to me. This Soros woman cannot be trusted and she will undermine him to do as Soros demands.

The Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith was named the 11th dean of the Cathedral on May 23, 2016[51] and began his tenure on Aug. 1, 2016. He was installed in November, 2016. In 2019, he launched the Cathedral’s five-year Strategic Plan[52] to focus on Welcoming, Deepening, Convening and Serving. In order to carry out the mission priorities of the five-year plan, the Cathedral launched a $150 million A Cathedral for the Future comprehensive campaign; at its public launch in 2022, the campaign had already surpassed $115 million.[53] The multifaceted campaign aims to secure total funding to complete earthquake repairs, fully renovate the 1938 Ernest M. Skinner & Son pipe organ, replace the audio system in the Cathedral nave, and sustain all operations over a five-year period.[54] A centerpiece of the campaign is the new Virginia Mae Center[55] (formerly known as the College of Preachers), which underwent a $24 million renovation to reopen as a fully accessible retreat house and conference center, and to serve as a hub of operations for the newly launched Cathedral College of Faith & Culture.[56]
Hollerith also navigated the Cathedral through dramatic changes and a pivot to digital-first operations when the COVID-19 pandemic closed the Cathedral’s doors for nearly 18 months.[57] From March 2020 through July 2021, all Cathedral services were online, with only minimal clergy and musicians inside the Cathedral. The Cathedral’s first Easter service during COVID, in 2020, attracted more than 50,000 online viewers,[58] and the Cathedral now counts a virtual congregation that spans six continents, with 3,000-5,000 viewers joining online for Sunday worship services every week.
Since 2016, under Hollerith’s leadership and financial stewardship, the Cathedral has stabilized its finances, reporting consecutive annual operating surpluses in its audited financial statements,[59] and moving forward with some large capital projects including the renovation and opening of the Virginia Mae Center,[60] commencement of the great organ renovation,[61] and continued earthquake repairs.

This past Sunday, I invited the Rev. Max Lucado to preach at Washington National Cathedral. He and I disagree on many things, but I invited him because I believed him to be a man of deep faith. Moreover, I hoped his presence would be a step toward building new bridges to the evangelical community. What I did not know was that he also had written and said some horrific things about LGBTQ people. However, that is no excuse.
Later, when people pointed out those writings to me, when they tried to tell me they were hurting because of this invitation, I didn’t listen. In my straight privilege I failed to see and fully understand the pain he has caused. I failed to appreciate the depth of injury his words have had on many in the LGBTQ community. I failed to see the pain I was continuing. I was wrong and I am sorry.
In my attempt to build new relationships with others, I didn’t see how my actions were damaging already cherished relationships with those who have been hurt by words and teachings of religious leaders like Reverend Lucado. And for that I apologize.
“Episcopal Bishop delivering her prayer called on Trump to show “mercy” to those “who are scared now,” specifically those who identify as LGBTQ or are illegal immigrants.”
Did she say that because those folks she mentioned are big donors to the Episcopal Church? Kinda like pay then pray then get away.
The not-so-subtle implication being that President Trump would otherwise be "merciless," and that his administration is specifically targeting sexual deviants for unlawful treatment.
Disgusting!
This is equivalent to pleading with the bishop to please NOT sexually abuse any schoolchildren.
Regards,
NO compassion for the mentally challenged children either.
She needs to review what GOD visited upon SODOM & GOMORRAH...and WHY!!
How does this work? Sure, they pay fuel taxes, property taxes...any number of taxes that can’t really be avoided...but I think she’s implying that they’re paying all of their payroll taxes. I guess a stolen SSN could fall under the heading of “improper documentation.”
You are one of the few here who actually get this! The Bishop used a multi denominational prayer service to become political. Not only highly offensive and inappropriate, but her church should lose tax exempt status and the National Cathederal, who had to be aware of her sermon, needs to suffer as well.
