Spanning 3,400 miles, the tunnel would be the most ambitious infrastructure project ever undertaken. The difficulties of building an underground rail tunnel all the way from London to New York might seem insurmountable, yet plans to actually construct such a tunnel are genuinely being considered, with those behind the idea estimating that it could cost somewhere in the region of $20 trillion.
Not only would the tunnel be the longest ever built by a huge margin at 3,400 miles long, but it would also make incredibly fast trans-Atlantic travel a reality, with trips between New York and London taking a mere 54 minutes to complete.
This remarkably short travel time would be achieved by creating a vacuum within the tunnel and using pressurized vehicles that could theoretically reach speeds of up to 3,000mph.

My first thought was that this tunnel would collapse upon the first earthquake. It’s also very unnecessary because cargo is more efficiently shipped on a cargo ship, which can take tens of thousands or C-cans at once and flight is the most efficient way to travel the globe for a passenger.
It’s just a tunnel to nowhere.
It'll never happen.
Don’t forget the increased costs fighting the leftists litigation to protect the starfish or something.
This actually was a disaster movie released in 1935 - TRANSATLANTIC TUNNEL starring Richard Dix.
Besides, why would anyone want to go to Londonistan (or is it now Londongrad, under Comrade Starmer)?
(Musk should use you as a consultant.)
You are wise!
Because subways are nicer than airplanes?
Like man going to Mars “will never happen”?
Only it will.
Giant boondoggle. As someone mentioned plate tectonics not to mention structure designed to resist pressure of tons per sq inch but the biggest question is WHY? It has to be the least cost effective project known to man and the most costly. You could build a lot of cargo ships and planes for that ridiculous sum. This crap doesn’t deserve any consideration but does deserve mockery - that having been said there are probably some government apparatchiks that are going to try to divert taxpayer funds to this idiotic idea
Expansion and contraction are accommodated in the design of bridges, tunnels, and other large infrastructure projects.
We all thought that no one would take that Cortez woman’s idiotic “green new deal” fantasy seriously
I was thinking that middle part would spring an 1/2 inch leak every year.
A horizontal Tower of Babel.
Musk will take a look at it and laugh.
It would have to be suspended in some way to avoid that type of movement.
Don’t tell Biden - he’ll announce that he’s going to have it built BEFORE he leaves office...”I’ll show that Trump fella.”
Where’s Willie Green when yet another fundamentally stupid Train idea arises?
