This week, Iran launched 180 ballistic missiles at Israel. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi justified the attack, calling it "an act of self defense against Israel's attempted genocide of the Palestinian people. The Hamas attack of October 7, 2023 and the Hezbollah missile strikes are righteous retaliation for 75 years of illegal Zionist occupation of lands belonging to Palestine. We are not unmerciful. If Israel heeds the warning we sent and vacates the stolen lands the attacks on its civilians will cease."
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) mostly agreed with Iran's position, saying "while Iran's missile strikes were unacceptable, their proposed ceasefire pending Israel's withdrawal from Palestine offers a starting point for negotiating a peaceful settlement. The presence of a Jewish state in the region won't be tolerated by the heirs of the Muslims who conquered that territory more than a thousand years ago. It won't be too long before Iranian missiles carry nuclear warheads. If we are to avoid the annihilation of the Jewish people currently living in Israel they have to agree to either live under Islamic rule or move to another part of the world."
Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) blamed the Iranian bombardment on "the failed policy of Donald Trump. President Obama had a masterful plan to woo Iran with kindness. By allowing Iran to become a nuclear power he hoped to show them that we could all live together peacefully under the mutually assured destruction balance of power that fostered five decades of peace between the United States and the Soviet Union. Rather than accept this policy, Trump rejected it and tried to block Iran's right to achieve nuclear status by starving the regime of funds. This left Iran with no alternative but to strike back at us and our presumed Israeli allies."
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said "Israel reserves the right to respond in the place and in the time that we determine. However, the fact that the only fatality that occurred from the Iranian missiles was a single Palestinian, the Israeli government may decide that the demonstration of the futility of Iran's attack may be the most powerful takeaway we could hope for."
