As Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and his police chief were frantically calling Governor Tim Walz in the summer of 2020 to save a besieged police precinct, Governor Tim Walz refused to send National Guard soldiers to help the beleaguered police officers. Later, in rationalizing and justifying his conscious decision to let riots metastasize, Walz said the Guard wasn't up to the task.
"I don’t think the mayor knew what he was asking for. He wanted the National Guard, and what does that mean? I think the mayor said, 'I request the National Guard, whew, this is great. We’re going to have massively trained troops.' No, you’re going to have 19-year-olds who are cooks, in some cases."
He went on to say, "Putting a young troop with limited experience in the military with a loaded automatic weapon in the middle of a system with no one giving him direction -- they don’t have zip ties. They don’t have legal authority,"
That was on Wednesday, by the time Walz finally authorized the deployment of "19-year-old" cooks, the Minneapolis Third Precinct had been sacked, and the riots were widespread.

To say nothing of the NG members that are former service. I think Timmy’s projecting. Because he’d have been useless as teats on a bull, everyone else in the Guard would be, as well.
"I do not regret that Tim Walz retired early from the Minnesota National Guard, did not complete the Sergeants Major Academy, broke his enlistment contract or did not successfully complete any assignment as a Sergeant Major. Unwittingly, he got out of the way for better leadership," John Kolb wrote on Facebook, the Daily Mail reported.
"The battalion commander of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s former Minnesota Army National Guard unit issued a scathing message to Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate amid mounting "stolen valor" accusations, according to media reports."
The people who knew him best have excoriated his leadership. As Governor, he could have ensured that the personnel in the NG were trained to handle civil unrest. His failure to do so validates the criticism of him by his superiors in the NG. What a putz.
National Guard Soldiers provide an organized, equipped and disciplined force for the Governor to use for state emergencies.
Walz knows that and is making excuses that only a true asshole would make.
I see the same problem.
Bump!!
”Coach” is losing it.
Trump described Walz as freakish. I couldn’t agree more.
Worked well in newark in 67. Targets spotted….targets sunk.
See tagline
His picture is next to the definitions of “creep” and “freakish” in the dictionary.
This is not the case. It's just not possible for any State to train all Soldiers in civil disorder and keep their status current. Two things can be true at once: Walz lied about his service and wasn't well-liked during his time in the Army, and training non-MP Soldiers to the civil disorder standard is just not a priority for any State. It can be done relatively quickly once the unrest has started, and he failed to act. That much is true.
“There are many jobs in the Army. The only Soldiers qualified to handle civil unrest are the MPs. Can you give cooks a couple days of civil disorder training, give them hats and bats, and send them to the front lines of a violent situation? Sure, you can, but it’s not a great solution. It happened recently in America, and the results weren’t great.”
Is this your opinion or a quote from someone else? If this is your statement, what are your referring to re: “It happened recently in America, and the results weren’t great.”
That is my opinion. I wrote it. The recent event I was referring to is the DC National guard that was deployed during the riots of summer 2020. All in all, it didn’t go well. Many of those soldiers were not MPs. They were given a couple days of disorder training and sent out to the streets of DC.
My father enlisted in 1939. His education was poor (5th grade) so they made him a cook. He was a cook right there in North Africa against Rommel’s remaining Germans, a cook in the campaign to take Sicily and Italy. He was a cook slogging it out in the mud and rain at Monte Cassino and then up through finishing Italy. He then went to cook in Europe after D-Day.
I’d like to punch Walz in the mouth, frankly. My pops actually carried weapons in war, was in many combat zones and was never able to just say “I wanna retire and go home so I can.....” He was in it for the duration.
Walz seems to think the National guard is just a social club for teens. Maybe it is. But if you sign up as a guardsman you better be ready to stand up and fight and not run...like the coward Walz!!
Walz doesn’t seem to know about the variation among Guard units which include Airborne units, Green Beret units and sometimes Ranger units for example, just as the Reserves has SEAL units, Guard snipers do well in the annual competition, some Guard units have vast experience, Civil Affairs units, medical units filled with older vets who do it for a living for example and have since their early PFC days in the Army.
There are coffee drinking Guard units and cracker jack Guard units.
That mouth is just waiting for something.........
That’s my point. You don’t have to be an MP, but if you aren’t an MP you have to be trained prior to being tasked with law enforcement/civil disorder duties. It’s probably precisely because of the 60s that the Guard has very specific rules for when they can be mobilized and for what purpose.
And then Walz sent the NG in shortly thereafter.
