There will come a time when the insurance companies will make it extremely costly to insure these things.

I didn't know there was insurance coverage for electronic bikes.

“There will come a time when the insurance companies will make it extremely costly to insure these things. And when a parking garage collapses from the weight of them, all bets are off.”

I’ve never even heard of insurance for e-bikes. And 95 pound e-bikes are going to collapse a concrete parking garage? Really??

This is absolutely horrible, but this stuff isn't exactly happening every day.

This didn’t look like the US. My guess is that is all the transportation he could afford.

He died a horrible death.

I feel bad for him.

I have a e-bike and do follow the fire reports. However, it’s my impression that all or virtually all of the fires have to do with modified changers and/or battery packs. I can not remember seeing a single instance of a fire occurring in a stock setup with the charger being operated within normal parameters (e g. Not trying to charge a frozen or overheated or damaged battery or overcharging). It is possible that such a scenario has occurred but I haven’t seen it.

What elevator electrical activity would that be?

Any idea what you are talking about?

He means electric cars. EVs are WAY heavier than gas burners. Some places don’t let you park them in multi level parking garages and as time goes on, more and more will adopt this policy.

If that is what happened, he wouldn’t have needed to plug anything in. If the battery was leaking, its electricity have been attracted to any exposed wiring and whatever.

This is China we are talking about. They build buildings in three days. I don’t think safety checks is included in that.

Well, I had a stock Riobi battery and charger.

It started charging funny and felt a little warm.

Took it back to Lowes. A quick look, and they issued me new charger and battery.

Now it charges outside, where I can continuously watch it.

My Trek bike has a temperature regulator built into the charger. If it gets too hot, it automatically shuts off until it cools down to continue charging.

So far, it has been doing a wonderful job with very little troubles.

There's a video of a Mike Moser e-bike on its very first ride, bursting into flame within eight or nine minutes of switch on. No hint of aftermarket or modified anything, total newbie rider (and a clueless idiot as well). The only thing that may have contributed was low outside temperature - but the pack was apparently charged to maximum without incident before the ride... it was while being discharged that it melted down. Have you seen discussion of temperature range for operation of these batteries?

That battery didn’t look all that big - imagine if it was an EV battery in a car.
