I live in central Illinois. Regular gas is pushing $4 a gallon with premium pushing $5 a gallon. I would guess this is related to Hurricane Beryl blowing through the gulf coast and Houston. Ouch...

Stop complaining. Living in Gruesome Newsom territory, I just paid $4.65 a gallon for Regular at a comparatively inexpensive supermarket gas station.

A few cars require it. Some will run better on it.

The Gas Buddy price map is quite instructive. There are a few spots as you go south from Northern IL, in I-57, where gas is cheaper. I’m guessing a different distributor services those areas. We paid IIRC $3.24.9 @ Tuscola, IL, a few days ago.
The map shows the effect of refinery outages, and the bigger effect of high taxes...

Governments making more on gas & oil should be stopped immediately. They don’t do ANYTHING for it except make things harder to exist for everybody else. So wrong! Gas where I live is relatively cheap, I guess & I don’t need to buy a lot of it either. Prices on other things make up for anything that’s cheap.

Yeah, I had a Mercedes that took premium and just used regular. The FCU adjusts for the octane reduction. It won't harm the engine at all. Actually, lower octane gas has a higher energy density, so the person that says they get higher mileage on high octane gas baffles me. A lot of it is marketing. “you bought a premium car, you should use premium gas”. Anyway, you can do your own research on youtube (rumble). I noticed zero change in performance and zero issues.
