F/A-XX Fighter Is In Trouble. What Does That Mean For Navy Aircraft Carriers?
National Security Journal ^ | 7/24/2024 | Robert Farley

Posted on 07/24/2024 12:11:30 PM PDT by whyilovetexas111

The F/A-XX program is intended to develop a carrier-based sixth-generation fighter that can conduct the same missions as the Super Hornet but that also enjoys supercruise, stealth characteristics and that can operate as the communications hub of a system of manned and unmanned systems.

The F/A-XX is a conceptual cousin of the NGAD program, but the projects have been kept at arm’s length, probably because of concerns over a replay of the F-35 program. Although the F-35 program eventually produced variants for the Navy, the Air Force, and the Marine Corps, the pursuit of commonality resulted in much confusion and not much cost savings.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Why would we dare even build this if the country is in $34 trillion in debt and can't afford our bills? Oh, and by the way, aren't aircraft carriers obsolete now if the Houthis and their 1970s missiles can target them?

How about recognizing that the day of carriers is almost over.

To remain afloat they will have to stay very mobile in blue water and avoid the seas where they now allow force projection.

The Navy will not accept the day of the carrier is over until some are lost. Just as they did not accept the day of the battleship was over until aviation proved so.

F/A-XX Fighter Is In Trouble.

We are only in the phase of artists' renditions of the plane, and it is already in trouble?

My goodness, is the DoD procurement process broken....

If we are evaluating the program by the need to field an aircraft, we didn’t even need the F22 or the JSF program, our F15s, F16s, and F18s have been perfectly servicable and would continue to be for far into the future.

But fielding aircraft wasn’t the point, it’s almost incidental so long as the defense contractors keep getting paid and lobbyist money keeps going to politicians.

I think the carrier as it is constituted now, days are numbered unless it can adapt to a changing environment. Unfortunately the US military is always fighting the last war.

Submarines, nuclear or efficient battery/diesel boats offer a lot more punch for the dollar. A modified attack boat with boomer build can throw a lot of missiles besides ICBM’s. That is assuming we have the knowledge to build something like that. Now we can’t seem to build a frigate or a new cruiser to save us out of hell. But our admirals know their correct pronouns...

A lot of the militaries of the world are realizing that war making is in transition right now.

No one has all the answers. Somethings FReepers say are pretty funny when these types of threads are posted.

My best answer is we’ve reached a point where the technologies we (think) we need are too costly to make into the numbers we (think) we need. We can make a lot of cheap, or a few of really advanced features. But no bucks, no Buck Rogers.

The generals and admirals are just starting to realize it.

This isn’t just an American dilemma; the Russians and Chinese have the same issues, as do the Europeans.

Does it even matter with ‘drones’ both air and sea.

Ukraine showed the Russian navy what the new technology can do.

This revolution is the same.

Carriers without a large fleet of of air and sea drones are just large targets.

Argh! I cut off the rest of my post.

Anyway, we need to re-examine our strategic goals for war. Do we need to fight the world every time there’s an issue?

We either get drawn into a WWI, or stay out of it, but still get drawn in like WWII.

If we just commit to defending our nation and no other—we got it made. We’re in a unique place where we can provide for ourselves with the rest of the world but are still physically isolated from attack.

In the short term, we need to reassess why we’re everywhere in the world. We need to focus on stopping the flood into our country by illegals.

In the long term, we still need to protect our interests in the world, but not so quick to make enemies at every little bug tussle.

America needs to not only stop the inward flow of illegals, she needs to deport millions.

Those er trillions are not military budget, but mostly illegal covd and bank loan pork... not to mention non profit leftist paramilitary funding and education funding

Half DoD budget is in woke education funding

Get the government out of building an aircraft and the cost would easily be cut in half. The government is like liberals, the F’ up everything they touch.

The last war was air dominance. The next war is not having it, or, at a minimum, not having it in the same way. Not just us, but I wonder if the Chiners realize this.

You realize they never really go near the shore right? Staying several hundred miles off shores is a 20 minute ride in a jet.

You realize that a couple hundred miles from shore is far too close, now, night?
