A DISAPPOINTING CHOICE
Powerline Blog ^ | July 15, 2024 | John Hinderaker

I think [Vance] is a bad decision for a number of reasons.

At 39, Vance is too young...with less than two years in the Senate as his only political office, he has nowhere near the experience that a VP should bring to a ticket.

Vance, who is unknown to the general public, won’t bring Trump a single new vote. In fact, there is no reason to think that he is any kind of political powerhouse: in his only race, he ran far behind the other statewide Republican candidates in Ohio.

...Vance’s political views are...half-baked. He is still evolving...he denounced Trump viciously in 2016, while now he is an acolyte. In 2016, it was dumb of Vance to describe Trump as an “idiot,” as “noxious,” as one who is either “a cynical asshole” or “America’s Hitler,” just as it is dumb for Democrats to say the same things today. Vance’s never-Trumpism showed poor judgment, and 2016 is not exactly ancient history. Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019...we don’t need a president or vice president who is still on a voyage of self-discovery.

...on foreign policy...he strikes me as something close to an isolationist. He attacks the Iraq war in a manner barely distinguishable from leftists, and his statement that “I got to be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another,” is flippant at best. The world needs a strong America; I am not sure Vance agrees.

...Vance is a bright guy and a pretty solid conservative, I don’t think he is...ready for prime time, and I don’t think he makes a perceptible contribution to the ticket. Trump had a number of much better choices available, and I think his selecting Vance reflects the poor judgment to which Trump is occasionally prone.

My response on that subject is, does anyone recall how all the Democrats were saying that Barack Obama was qualified to be president because he had been a community organizer?

I think Trump thought it over very carefully.

I don’t know what Trump is planning exactly, but assume Vance will play a role.

I’m in.

Good point.

Conventional “wisdom” is going to put us in a box if we’re not careful.

I partially disagree with Hindraker:

That he has only been in the Senate for two years might be a saving grace: Maybe in two years, “The Big Club That WE Ain’t In.” hasn’t been able to completely corrupt him.

I’ve long held a policy of not liking to vote for Senators, because after a while, even the best of them, after they have been in the Senate they become like Frat Bros, who love their least liked Fraternity Brother more than they do their own most loved outsider. Even after they are out of the Senate, they will lie, cheat steal, and some of them even willing to kill to protect another ‘club member’.

In my old life, I had been friends with two U.S. Senators, Both of them were great, honest and honorable guys: “Mister Smiths” before they went to D.C. But by their second campaign, they had been corrupted and no longer much cared about the folks back home. And beyond my personal experience, you can see it with nearly every other Senator in the last many decades.

That was a freaking body blow when he said Chamber of Commerce and the Business Council were nothing but Unions for the rich.

It’s not gonna hurt to have the Teamsters on our side. UAW won’t be far behind. And young black men are exploding for Trump right now. 50 cent gave him a big tribute on stage last night. The dam has broken...

And with new constituencies, cheating gets VERY tough. Some of them have reputations of bad reactions to rip offs. And the cheaters will have no clue about who is undercover.
used to, they could trust a rapper or a young hip hop fan. They could trust a Teamster. Now.... maybe not.

My Great- Grandfather founded the Iron Workers Union in NYC. He would have been astounded to see a Union Leader speaking Prime Time at a Republican Convention. Trump has turned the GOP into a multiracial working and Middle Class party.

“he openly admitted he was not a fan of Trump in 2016. And that’s all right.”

I’m not so sure.

The interviewer should have politely and respectfully asked him “why?”

Bet he would not have had a good answer.

None of them do.

Not the VP choice I was hoping for. His age and general lack of experience takes me back to when Bush the elder chose Dan Quayle to be his VP.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

I think the author of this piece (John Hinderaker) should go back to raking every Hinde he encounters.

JD Vance is the perfect running mate for Trump.

>>What did Hinderaker think of President Trump when he first was going to run?

Hinderaker has never been a Trump fan. Here’s an example from January, after DeSantis threw in the towel:

https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2024/01/its-trump.php

But he has come around. He doesn’t like Trump personally but he has never withheld his respect for the good things President Trump did in his first term.
