A DISAPPOINTING CHOICE

I think [Vance] is a bad decision for a number of reasons.

At 39, Vance is too young...with less than two years in the Senate as his only political office, he has nowhere near the experience that a VP should bring to a ticket.

Vance, who is unknown to the general public, won’t bring Trump a single new vote. In fact, there is no reason to think that he is any kind of political powerhouse: in his only race, he ran far behind the other statewide Republican candidates in Ohio.

...Vance’s political views are...half-baked. He is still evolving...he denounced Trump viciously in 2016, while now he is an acolyte. In 2016, it was dumb of Vance to describe Trump as an “idiot,” as “noxious,” as one who is either “a cynical asshole” or “America’s Hitler,” just as it is dumb for Democrats to say the same things today. Vance’s never-Trumpism showed poor judgment, and 2016 is not exactly ancient history. Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019...we don’t need a president or vice president who is still on a voyage of self-discovery.

...on foreign policy...he strikes me as something close to an isolationist. He attacks the Iraq war in a manner barely distinguishable from leftists, and his statement that “I got to be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another,” is flippant at best. The world needs a strong America; I am not sure Vance agrees.

...Vance is a bright guy and a pretty solid conservative, I don’t think he is...ready for prime time, and I don’t think he makes a perceptible contribution to the ticket. Trump had a number of much better choices available, and I think his selecting Vance reflects the poor judgment to which Trump is occasionally prone.

The world needs a strong America; I am not sure Vance agrees.

Warmongers routinely trash Americans who refuse to go along with their warmongering, but it really falls flat with Vance. He's a Marine, with all that implies. Maybe he's just sick and tired of the fact that men and women in US uniform have been serving as thugs for the Capitol District elites and their special interests, rather than defending America.

He was IN Iraq as a Marine, moron. What war were you in Hinderacker? With all your expertise you must have been in one, right?

There were a few on the board who would’ve been bad choices. Vance was not one of them. Just my two cents.

The #1 job of a VP is to be a deterrent to taking out the POTUS. This is the reason Agnew was Nixon’s VP, as Agnew truly frightened the left. So they had to take him out first before even considering impeachment.

It also works internationally. So does the idea of
J. D. Vance as POTUS scare the ruthless tin pot dictators around the world? How about Democrats and the media? If he does that he is a good choice.

I will always be grateful to Richard Nixon for exposing Alger Hiss, and even more so, for Operation Linebacker II in December 1972.

Interestingly, I watched a little known movie called “Near Miss”, an actual true story about a US jeep carrier in Korea in 1953 that somehow ended up with a Korean-American infant on board that had been left in an allied ammo dump by a Korean mother who didn’t want him.

The baby almost got forced to stay in Korea where he would almost surely have been neglected and died because he was half American, and he was adopted by the ship’s crew and was going to sail back until Admiral Carney (Bill Halsey’s Chief of Staff in WWII) got wind of it and told the captain to get the baby off the ship before they came back to the states.

Typical bureaucracy.

But somehow Richard Nixon heard about it, and made a call to the CNO (Carney) to tell him to let the baby sail home on the ship, and convinced him it would be great publicity for the Navy. Apparently, Carney reluctantly agreed. It was indeed a near miss, as the ship was sailing in a matter of hours, or even minutes. (can’t remember)

I fully agree that Nixon had certain views that made him anathema to conservatives, such as the EPA and price controls, and am wholly in agreement with them.

But I always felt that Nixon got a raw deal. The Left never, ever forgave him for Alger Hiss, and hunted Nixon his entire life until they finally bagged him.

But Nixon did love his country, which puts him heads and shoulders over nearly all politicians today.

I don't know anything about Vance other than he has supporters and detractors on FR.

I don't know much about Vance either but the more I learn about him, the more I like him.

I do know this. Trump's VP pick could've been much, much worse. I'm pleasantly surprised he didn't go straight swamp. He didn't pick Lindsey Graham or Nikki Haley. He didn't pick a "checks the right box" DEI hire. He picked a young, white guy who, from what I've learned, is pretty based.

So he's only been a senator for a short time? So what? Obama was a first-term senator as well and he went on to serve two terms, radically shifting the Democrat Party leftward, expanding the deep state, and filling every unelected bureaucratic position in Washington with partisan Kommissars, --many of whom still hold their jobs! We didn't like it but to the Marxist left, "inexperienced" Obama was a great success!

I looked it up. JD said this even before the was a war in Ukraine. At that time - nobody cared.

Exactly. The conventional playbook is FINISHED. Focus on the middle class and the working poor. That’s what I saw tonight. Having the Teamster’s president speak, even though I didn’t agree with everything he stated, was the magic touch. Corporations form unions, why can’t laborers? In PRINCIPLE, labor unions are just capitalization of LABOR. Unfortunately, they have been aligned with the LEFTISM and MARXISM all these years because it was leftist democrats that pandered to them for their vote. It’s time to change that. It will take a long time to reverse the marxism that exists in labor unions today. But this is a great start.

Pence the traitor had more experience and we know how that worked out. Pence was in politics long enough to be owned and compromised.

Vance’s credentials are he’s a solid conservative that won’t betray his running mate. Unlike the former.

Someone who believes as this ahole does that America should be military intervening around the world while bankrupt is not a conservative, rather, a NeoCon, totally different.

This nut wanted Rubio. He is all in on Ukraine and anything neocon. That would have been an awful choice.

I generally like what John Hinderaker has to say, but this time I think he's dead wrong. Trump didn't select Vance to be his Vice-President. He selected him to be his Apprentice. After four years of hands-on training by The Donald, I think J.D. Vance will be a GREAT presidential candidate in 2028!

And one far more likely to carry on and build upon the legacy of Donald Trump than George H.W. Bush ever did after Ronaldus Magnus. Talk about your squandered opportunities.
