Why Has The Chinese Military Suddenly Become So Aggressive? Is Something Up?

Does China sense weakness in the White House? In recent days Chinese troops have been sent to Belarus for military exercises, dozens of Chinese military aircraft have been threatening Taiwan, and four Chinese military vessels were even detected off the coast of Alaska. So why has China decided to become so aggressive all of a sudden? Right now, Joe Biden is facing endless questions about his competency, and those around him are focused on fighting for his political survival. So could foreign adversaries such as China use this window of opportunity to do things that they may not normally attempt to do?

According to authorities in Taiwan, 66 Chinese military aircraft and 7 Chinese military vessels were “operating around Taiwan” on Wednesday…

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) on Thursday said that it had detected 66 Chinese military aircraft and vessels around the island, apparently en route to a Chinese military exercise in the Western Pacific.

The media outlet embedded a statement by Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence on its X platform.

“66 PLA aircraft and seven PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 am (2200 GMT Wednesday) today,” the statement said.

When asked about this, the Chinese government responded by declaring that the operation was about protecting “its sovereignty and territorial integrity”…

An overly enthusiastic naval lieutenant on a Chinese patrol boat or any of thousands of others in charge of a weapon aimed at foreigners could touch off a major crisis.

Those sorts are held in check by their political officers. All decisions must go through them, and then be cleared by fleet political officers.

The China Belarus exercises also saw Russian participation.

Of course the ChiCom military is acting up. The U.S. has a senile president and a SecDefComPoop, who have sent most of our weapons to Ukraine.

Maybe the Chinese military is the same amount of aggressive as always (I certainly won't say non-aggressive). And our ruling class has suddenly decided to notice.

China has been acting very aggressive. This May I was in Taipei, and the Chinese were running a naval exercise wherin they were surroubding Taiwan with task forces.

This all was kicked off by the Taiwan elections.

Whatever stupudity, or evil, the US administration is up to, there are other bad actors in the world. All events everywhere are not bound up in one US-centric conspiracy theory.

Xi respected Trump, and therefore the USA.
Xi has no respect for Biden. Why would he?

“who have sent most of our weapons to Ukraine.”

This is absurd.

So perhaps it’s only for domestic consumption? A little saber rattling to take their minds off of their troubles.

In theory. In practice, even in disciplined and tightly controlled military organizations, sometimes things happen that are not supposed to happen.

For example, in the Hainan Island incident in April of 2001, there was a midair collision between a four engine United States Navy EP-3E signals intelligence aircraft and a Chinese Air Force interceptor. The Chinese pilot was overly aggressive in his sanctioned harassment maneuvers and collided with the much larger and slower American aircraft.

The Chinese interceptor and pilot were lost, while the US plane was badly damaged and had to land on Chinese territory after some extraordinary flying. That led to ten days of captivity for the US crew and Chinese ransacking of the US spy plane. The US had to issue a letter of regret to get them back. The Chinese public rallied to the communist regime in a burst of patriotic fervor.

I am sure that the Chinese regard the Hainan Island incident as an unplanned success and a victory against America.

Immediate reason for a large recent increase (within a slower long-term increase) is Taiwan politics.

First to intimidate the electorate in the runup to the recent election -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Taiwanese_presidential_election

And then to intimidate the government, as well as Taiwans friends in the region (really informal allies).

There is also the ongoing Taiwan arms buildup. After many years, Taiwan is engaged in a major refresh of armaments. Buying more Patriot SAMs for instance.

Land=position=power

Taiwan would give China a chokehold on East Asian westbound trade. Because of merchant ship routing, effectively all seaborne trade.

This will let it dictate to Japan and South Korea, and others too. China will demand their investment, tech, global markets.
