The administration of United States President Joe Biden has called for the rapid deployment of a Kenyan-led security force to Haiti following the killing of three US missionaries in the violence-hit Caribbean country.
The appeal on Friday came shortly after US non-profit Missions in Haiti Inc announced that three of its missionaries were fatally shot by armed gunmen on Thursday night in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.
The deaths are the latest in months of spiralling violence in Port-au-Prince, which remains largely under the control of powerful armed groups that have unleashed a wave of deadly attacks across the city.
They also came as Kenyan President William Ruto wrapped up a visit to Washington, DC, where he met Biden and other senior US leaders to discuss a range of issues, including the long-stalled Haiti deployment.
“The security situation in Haiti cannot wait,” a National Security Council spokesperson said on Friday, adding that Biden had pledged to support the “expedited deployment” of the Kenya-led force in talks with Ruto on Thursday.
“Our hearts go out to the families of those killed as they experience unimaginable grief,” the spokesperson added, referring to the missionaries.
Missouri State Representative Ben Baker on Friday identified his daughter, Natalie Lloyd, and son-in-law, Davy Lloyd, as being among those killed.

How many times has the USA invaded Haiti in the past? Each time we spend lots of money, fix it up, establish a “democracy” and leave. Only to have the corrupt government loot the treasure, run out and the nation slips into a tyranny. Only proving that a bad government is better than no government. Looks like we will have to do it again. This time set up a tyrant king rather than a sham republic and maybe that will work. UN will not do—nor will an “International peace force.” Maybe let Red China-Russia have a shot at trying to fix Haiti, we haven’t done a good job if it, Maybe let the Mafia run the nation and set up casinos and brothels, drug factories and smuggling dens here? They might establish the rule of law and bring prosperity.
My ancestors were silver smiths on the island during their revolution. They wanted to settle in Quebec but couldn't wait and took first boat out of Dodge. Settled in Philadelphia and had very successful business until depression in the 1870's. Some of their pieces of silver are still on display at the Phila. Museum of Art.
