A remake of the 1960s cult classic Barbarella is currently in the works with Sydney Sweeney set to star, and there are already a ton of exciting updates about the new movie. Based on the French comic series by artist Jean-Claude Forest, 1968's Barbarella stars Jane Fonda as the titular space traveler who is dispatched on a dangerous mission to find the evil scientist Durand Durand who has created a weapon that could destroy all humanity. Though not as famous as contemporaries like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barbarella helped shape the face of science fiction for decades to come.

Is there a creative soul left in H-wood?
Dear God....
I can’t wait to see what The Critical Drinker will have to say about the prospect of a woke “Barbarella”
Why? It sucked back then. Stupid incoherent Eurotrash cinema.
AOC has boobs. And is slender. But a horse face. To a lot of people all that matters is the boobs. Lefties salivate over the commie idiot.
SciFi “Cult classic” to who?
Karen Black deserves at least honorable mention when it comes to playing hot/crazy...
You’re right. I saw the original unedited version. Overall a terrible movie but Janes body and looks were stunning.
It’ll probably have dylan mulvaney as Barberella.
Yes. A lot of movies have been remade in the past. Sometimes they were better. Not any more. Now they are messaged and stupid and have to have obligatory gay garbage. Look at Disney’s ruination of every thing they get hold of. They don’t even care if they make a profit any more. They can’t even get rid of obvious wreckers like Kathleen Kennedy.
I think the people who call it a cult classic have never tried to sit through it.
The best thing the movie did was give us a band name. A character in the movie was named Dr. Durand Durand. The band saw the movie on the BBC and the next day named their band Duran Duran.
With the way Hollywood is today, I'm surprised it isn't Lizzo.
Any short explaination for what it changed? 2001 and Star Wars are the usual go-to examples for that.
Influencing the movie Star Crash, I can understand! 😄
Heh - nice choice of words...
Us kids at the time referred to it as boobarella, but titular space traveler is pretty good to!
I snuck into see it in hopes of seeing Jane Fonda naked
Speaking of, there has been a movie poster circulating on social media recently, depicting a remake of Soylent Green with Josh Brolin. Fortunately, it seems to be fake.
In her post-feminist analysis, Fonda has of late expressed having pretty “complicated feelings”
toward “Barbarella and the realization that it turned her into a bona fide sex symbol.
I guess it never occurred to her.../s...that doing a striptease
on film would “objectify” her, as a feminist would say.
She told Glamour magazine in May 2022 that she felt conflicted about the plot and found it a “bit objectifying of me and women.”
It took her awhile to figure it out.
Fonda said in 2022 that she only did “Barbarella” because her husband at the time, the film’s director Roger Vadim, wanted her to do it — and she was pretty passive in their relationship. “If he didn’t want me to do a particular movie, I wouldn’t do it,” Fonda said. “I was pretty much doing whatever the men in my life wanted me to do.”
Later she bad-mouthed Vadim....now her ex.......for putting her in a film (a film she seemed eager to do).
