A large cargo ship lost power in New York City waters near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge just weeks after the Dali ship lost power before crashing into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland.

The 89,000-ton Qingdao containership lost all its power around 8:30 pm on Saturday between Bayonne, New Jersey, and Staten Island, New York.

Bridges in the news.

There’s a Gematria (Kabbalic numerology) website claiming that the next 9/11 type event will be the destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge. They published a book about it - in German.

Interesting tidbit…the statue of Francis Scott Key - that was in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, was toppled by vandals on June 19, 2020 , in the wake of the George Floyd incident.

The ship that hit the Key Bridge had two local harbor pilots. Maybe the rule should be two local pilot tugs. At least where is a serious allision hazard.

And it was not really near the Verrazano, more like between the Goethals and Bayonne bridges.

I believe even that one had tugboats while in closer to the harbor—but not out to the usually wide-open lane it was in when it was sent haywire.

“Hmmmm....what are the odds....both under foreign flags. “

Very few of the major container ships are U.S. flagged vessels. There are nearly 6,000 such vessels of which less than 200 are U.S. flagged.

The double loss of power during restricted maneuvering was the most believable part of the Baltimore crash. IYKYK.

Never been around big ships eh? This is incredibly common. Even in our Navy.

Already the situation. Pilots are locals who board ships to take them into narrower waters because they know the channels, tides, wind conditions affecting navigation etc. Only local pilots would know that stuff. I believe that is the practice worldwide.

IMHO, the new rules should require vessels over a certain size to have tug escorts until they clear harbor infrastructure/reach open water.

I lived in Williamsburg. Visited Norfolk. Dad was a Radio Operator in WWII. We had a model of a Liberty Ship. It went to my brother who was a retired Mariner at the time.

Rules up the kazoo. No little of the rules....I admit.

The end of ramadong brought cries of Death to America in Michigan, and our leaders just look on, doing nothing.

Maybe our leaders are on their side.

Need new rule...in USA Waters, there must be an American Pilot on every ship.

I thought that was the norm, worldwide really. A local guy with intimate knowledge of the local harbor comes out and "advises" the captain and guides the ship into port.

Makes no difference when the power goes out and you can’t steer the ship.

Once is bad luck.

Twice is coincidence.

Three times is enemy action.

Actually the odds are pretty high. Most of the ships in the world are flagged elsewhere. And busy areas are busy areas, and more ships means more ships having problems. This probably happens every couple weeks around some bridge or another, but they don’t hit the bridge, so nobody cares. Owing to the timing this one made news.
