Growing numbers of children and adolescents are being prescribed multiple psychiatric drugs to take simultaneously, according to a new study in the state of Maryland. The phenomenon is increasing despite warnings that psychotropic drug combinations in young people have not been tested for safety or studied for their impact on the developing brain.
The study, published Friday in JAMA Open Network, looked at the prescribing patterns among patients 17 or younger enrolled in Medicaid in Maryland from 2015 to 2020. In this group, there was a 9.5 percent increase in the prevalence of “polypharmacy,” which the study defined as taking three or more different classes of psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, mood-stabilizing anticonvulsants, sedatives and drugs for A.D.H.D. and anxiety drugs.
The Big Picture The study looked at only one state, but state data have been used in the past to explore this issue, in part because of the relative ease of gathering data from Medicaid, the health insurance program administered by states.
At the same time, some research using nationally weighted samples have revealed the increasing prevalence of polypharmacy among young people. One recent paper drew data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and found that in 2015, 40.7 percent of people aged 2 to 24 in the United States who took a medication for A.D.H.D. also took a second psychiatric drug. That figure had risen from 26 percent in 2006.

Cities & towns are crawling with mentally ill zombies.
Big win for pharmaceutical companies. Can’t they make a law requiring people to be on a minimum number of pharmaceuticals? Some people are slipping through the cracks.
Oh you know it is coming where they make us take at least 3 or 4 mentally debilitating drugs that would make 15th Century Chinese addition to opium pale in comparison.
There’s money to be made and people to control & conquer.
This is normal for the DNC/commie controlled parts of America. There are so many social and cultural factors along with a shrink on every corner it’s easy to see why.
When I was a kid at school there was no student counselor/shrink. There was no nurse. Your feelings got hurt, you got over it and learned from it. Got a bruise? Mom put a band aid on it or took you to the doctor. There was no such thing as attention deficit disorder. You had a problem with attention, your hands got slapped with a ruler. We all had guns and used them and knew damn well you don’t point a gun at someone and pull the trigger.
Today they are taught to be afraid of anything and everything. Someone shuns them on social media and it’s a suicidal crisis. Feelings are top priority when readin, writin and rithmatic should be.
I could go on with this tranny crap and political indoctrination and America hating, but the point is, no wonder they are messed up in the head.
Mama’s little helper’s helper.
Perfect.
More and more doctors no longer are working for themselves but are instead working for a firm.
The firm is in bed with the Pharma companies.
It is an incestuous relationship that is making billions of dollars while ending the traditional relationship between the doctor and patient where the welfare of the patient is paramount.
The new relationship is to use the patient as a milk cow.
I have always considered my ADD/ADHD a blessing and Gods gift to Humanity that everyone should strive for. But I am also old, children weren’t coddled back then or drugged and we never got any participation trophies.
The study was done using Medicaid as the provider. Wouldn’t that imply that the children were the offspring of people in the poverty level? Otherwise the children would have been covered by Premera,Regence or some other paid program.
The pumping of SSRIs, especially in young women, is the new opioid scam.
Put a bit more Christ in your life and you’ll get much better results!
Amen!
Sickening, but true.
This is what a failed society looks like. That’s where we are.
“Big win for pharmaceutical companies.”
Those companies are not isuing or perscribing them. You want to get on someone, get on the docs and on the public for not using better methods to track and limit their prescribing. If people need a drug according to the AMA watched over by the FDA, the companies make it. But the companies do not prescribe, issue, or have any say who they go to. So why blame them?

I guess you don't know, everyone in the FDA with any power is a former (and often future) pharmaceutical executive. And workers who are "to strict" about approving drugs are pressure out of the FDA.
And let's not forget the pharmaceutical industry meeting with President Obama, and "helped him write" the Affordable Care Act.
Also, you inferred the blame, I just said it was a win for them. But, yes, they deserve plenty of blame.
