Sharpshooter Annie Oakley, born On August 13, 1860, Was A Very Tough Woman.

In this century, Oakley, for me, is a beacon of deeply American and female toughness and freedom.

She said: "God intended women to be outside as well as men, and they do not know what they are missing when they stay cooped up in the house."

"I would like to see every woman know how to handle guns as naturally as they know how to handle babies."

"Any woman who does not thoroughly enjoy tramping across the country on a clear frosty morning with a good gun and a pair of dogs does not know how to enjoy life."

"After traveling through fourteen foreign countries and appearing before all the royalty and nobility I have only one wish today. That is that when my eyes are closed in death that they will bury me back in that quiet little farm land where I was born."

Annie Oakley: Sharpshooter & Remarkable Woman

Phoebe Ann Mosey was born on a farm in the western part of Ohio (Darke County). She was the sixth of seven surviving children born to her parents.. Her father died when she was quite young. To help provide the family with food, Phoebe set traps in the woods. One day when she was 6, she reportedly took her father’s gun and killed a squirrel.

Snip...Because of the family situation, Annie never attended school regularly. Instead, she hunted to help the family. She killed enough game that she could sell it to local hotels and restaurants. With this added income for the family, her mother worked to pay down the mortgage on the farm.

Bought the wife a Ruger Mk2 .22 pistol. Dang did she get good with it fast. Good times. Most ranges within a 2 hour drive have closed, and the only one is outside with nasty bathrooms.

She taught herself to shoot with both her left and her right hands, and she could work with a pistol, a rifle, or a shotgun. Pretty impressive, wouldn't you say?

Phoebe Ann Mosey, who took the stage name Annie Oakley, was born in Darke County Ohio, and became a phenomenal shot hunting in the woods to feed her poor family. When traveling sharpshooter Frank Butler came to town and challenged the local favorite, the locals backed young Phoebe, and she beat him. After that Frank didn’t rest until Phoebe became Mrs Frank Butler, and he retired from sharpshooting to manage his even more talented wife. So Irving Berlin’s famous song is entirely wrong; she certainly did get a man with a gun.

During her years appearing in the Buffalo Bob Wild West Show in NYC, Annie and her husband lived in Nutley New Jersey, and Annie is now enshrined in the Nutley Hall of Fame. Another performer in the show, Chief Sitting Bull, symbolically adopted Annie into the Sioux nation as his daughter, naming her Little Sure Shot.
