I’m dodging the Dodgers, and pretty much all professional sports. Thing is I’ve been dodging them for years.
About 25 years ago, when my son was seven years old, I took him to a San Francisco Giants baseball game at the old Candlestick Park. We had nice seats about halfway between the third base foul pole and third base. Before the game started, they unfurled the “AIDS Quilt,” a giant quilt that, at the time, “honored” those who died from AIDS.
My son asked “Dad, what’s that? Why are they unrolling that in the outfield.”
Thank you, San Fran Giants for putting me in an awkward position with my young son.
I didn’t tell him it was all about men butt-forking other men, getting sick from it and dying. I said “It is some pretty artwork some people had made and were showing off” and that was that.
But, ever since, I’ve had to look to see if the sports teams are “honoring” some perversion before I take the family to an event.
