I can understand a media circus, truly I can. However, and maybe this is just me with a strong connection to family, I would have found a trusted family member to stay with the children, and parked myself at the hospital to be an advocate for my husband's care. The children have to be suffering from constant turmoil over the past year or so with their father's stroke and the election campaigning. Wouldn't you want to reassure them by trying to keep them as anchored as possible to their home, belonging, friends, and some stability in their lives? Instead, she presents herself to her children as totally unhinged and out of control.

Here’s the thing. If you don’t want to get caught up in a media circus, then don’t be an actor, a singer, a politician, etc. Media scrutiny is just part of the deal with those jobs.

I don’t fault her for doing as she did. She has three children 12 and under, plus a household and the media to manage during this time. She probably needed to get away from the eye of the storm for a little while.
Every family and marriage is different. Maybe her staying there would not give her husband the peace and quiet he needs right now. She may be the type where the more nervous she is, the more she talks. I don’t know them.

Probably just me being a suspicious old biddy but follow my line of reasoning here.

Husband is on medication.

Husband goes in the hospital.

Wife takes kids and runs to another country.

What is she afraid that the doctors will find out?

More than just running, she took the kids on a fun vacation, because, she told them, joy and fun must always exist even in dark times.
