What is diversity, and why is it so good for college students?
That’s one of the questions at the heart of the Supreme Court cases over race-conscious admissions practices at Harvard and the University of North Carolina, and it was asked early and often during the nearly five hours of oral arguments last week.
“I’ve heard the word ‘diversity’ quite a few times, and I don’t have a clue what it means,” Associate Justice Clarence Thomas said to UNC’s lawyer, North Carolina Solicitor General Ryan Park. “I’d like you to give us a specific definition of diversity in the context of the University of North Carolina. And I’d also like you to give us a clear idea of exactly what the educational benefits of diversity at the University of North Carolina could be.”
It was the opening question to Park, and it should have been a softball. The educational benefits of diversity—the idea that all students get a boost from learning alongside classmates of different races—is absolutely central to Carolina’s case. It’s been part of Supreme Court jurisprudence on affirmative action for decades, ever since the controlling opinion in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978) affirmed a “compelling state interest” in diversity on campus.
Park’s meandering, multipart answer—touching on rural students, veterans, enhanced creativity, bias reduction, “deepness and richness” in the learning environment, and the statistically stronger performance of racially diverse groups of stockbrokers (!)—exemplified the mushy, everything-to-everyone logic that has made affirmative action such a ripe target for litigants and such a lopsided loser in opinion polls. “We value diversity of all different kinds in all the ways that people differ in our society,” Park said. Look for the conservative opinion to quote that line disapprovingly come June.

I hope that means diversity of opinions.
Di longer you verk here, diverse it gets!
Affirmative action is going to be killed at last.
Wow. We've been waiting DECADES for somebody to ask those two questions. Good for Justice Thomas!
Did North Carolina Solicitor General Ryan Park reply with dripping condescension: "Why, everybody KNOWS Diversity Is Our Strength. Duh!!"?
From what I’ve seen it looks like diversity means getting to mix with really stupid people of all colors.
Many diverse people are all mostly the same..where it counts.
They vote the same.
Most hate actual equality and fairness..because if there was actual equality and fairness ..they might have to make it on their own
Tmany lie cheat and steel to get things their way.
They want “their share” of your pie.
This forcing one tribe to cross into another's tribe's territory simply will not work....ever. We will always gather into tribes by our commonness.
I just read Park’s meandering, mushy, everything-to-everybody answer and, yes, he did effectively reply “Everybody KNOWS Diversity Is Our Strength.”
He also said: “We value diversity of all different kinds in all the ways that people differ in our society.” Yeah, right. To test your claim, just invite Ann Coulter to your campus to speak.
[[Wow. We’ve been waiting DECADES for somebody to ask those two questions]]
And ,the only one that has asked it, had the guts tk ask it, was a black justice. Ourse they will accuse him of being an uncle Tom for asking it, but it needed to be asked.
Just look at what it did to our manufacturing and industry.
Investors want workers/production not HR drama...
...and so goes the capital.
What’s great about diversity? Nothing. It is an enforced system that places excellence in last place. That is where we are in many ways now, last place.
Diversity is like the women’s rights program. It is designed to give access to the mainstream of society and outcome, not opportunity, to the average or less than average at the expense of the more able people.
Diversity is strength is communist propaganda.
Diversity is perversity of greatness is the truth.
That's what this diversity, CRT, Black Lives Matter, anti-racism, affirmative action, etc. is all about.
If puts control in someone's hands.
The question is "whose?"
If diversity really is strength, then the Austro-Hungarian Empire would have won the first world war.
Diversity is the ruin of empires. Unity is strength; unity of values and a unified philosophical framework in which a people view the world. For America, this has historically been and individualist philosophy of self-sufficiency build on a foundation of Christian morality. Collectivism and amorality cannot exist side by side with our traditional values. A house divided among itself cannot stand.
I means “anti-white male”. If you’re not a white-male it is good for YOU. White females also support it but are too slow to realize the mob will come for their ‘whiteness’ sooner or later.
It’s nothing but anti-white, anti-western culture, anti-Christian doctrine wrapped in a ‘virtuous blanket’, also under a veil of communism.
Diversity means a seat on the court for someone who doesn’t know what a woman is.
Diversity + Proximity = Violence
diversity is a weakness and is a buzzword for anti-white racism.
