Some Delta Air Lines passengers received an offer this morning they couldn’t refuse.
Delta flight 3550 operated by SkyWest from Grand Rapids, Michigan (GRR) to Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) apparently was oversold. There were more confirmed passengers who showed up at the airport than there were available seats on the Embraer 175 aircraft.
Airlines generally ask for volunteers to take later flights in instances like these. In return, the volunteers are given rewards such as gift cards, vouchers for future travel, etc. (Here on the blog, we call these “Bumpertunities.”) We’ve taken voluntarily denied boarding opportunities like these countless times and scored anywhere from $400 to $3,000. A few years ago, a woman traveling to South Bend, Indiana, received $4,000 in Delta bump vouchers.
Those amounts are nothing compared to what Delta reportedly coughed up this morning.
Delta Offers Passengers $10,000! Well, it seems things were dire in Grand Rapids this morning — and Delta offered passengers $10,000 to take later flights.
You read that correctly.

Eh... I doubt it.
Probably what they were offering was a voucher good toward a discount on a full priced fare bought within a certain time frame.
10k in vouchers to be redeemed at some company store rate? Or greenbacks?
Article says ‘gift card’ not voucher?
Leave a day ahead.
Might cost you some extra, but it could be less than you’d
have to pay if things go south.
If things don’t change direction, we could be a major nation
without air travel.
Since this is a garbage conservative blog, as opposed to a real news site, we should not expect too many details like that.
No way
Negotiations Negotiations Negotiations Expensive Negotiable Negotiations
To be redeemed at bed bath and no a/c?
I think there is a limit on how much you can put on them. $250 if I recall correctly.
Looking through the twitter feed...apparently it was real Visa Gift Cards to use anywhere.
Incredible
$1000 maximum, so 10 cards
Mods, I would check this guy out.
In Vegas, do the airlines offer hookers to give up your seat? At least, you have someone to keep you warm at night waiting for tomorrow morning’s flight.
Cash or Delta dollars?
They did that to me once but it was basically, credit with the airline. Since I had missed three legs of an eight-leg flight, was a day late for my conference (Missed my presentation), and hadn’t slept in two days, I asked, “What makes you think I am EVER going to fly this airline again? If I have no other choice I will swim, row, walk, or ride a bicycle first.”
No. I just retired from an airline. It is a Visa gift card.
I think it’s higher than that. I once won a $500 gift card at work. Granted, that was years ago.
I would settle for some nominal amount - maybe $1,500 to $2,000 - to not even book a flight on their system.
