Left-Wing Group Tries to Disqualify Republican Frontrunner in PA Governor’s Race on ‘Insurrection’ Grounds
The Epoch Times ^ | April 17, 2022 | Matthew Vadum

A left-wing group is trying to disqualify outspoken Trump supporter Pennsylvania state Senator Doug Mastriano from the state governor’s race because he allegedly participated in an “insurrection” against the U.S. government by supporting the former president’s reelection bid.

Recent polling shows Mastriano has the lead—garnering 19 percent support—in the field of 9 candidates seeking the Republican nomination for governor of the Keystone State, according to a poll Eagle Consulting Group conducted of 502 likely GOP primary voters from April 7 through April 9, PennLive reports. The primary election is May 17. The current governor, Democrat Tom Wolf, is term-limited. Attorney General Josh Shapiro is running unopposed in the Democratic Party’s gubernatorial primary.

This alleged insurrection supposedly culminated in the security breach on Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol complex in which supporters of then-President Donald Trump delayed the congressional certification of the 2020 presidential election results for several hours. Democrats and a handful of Republicans characterize the disturbance as an insurrection or coup attempt aimed at overthrowing the U.S. government, a claim that has been adamantly denied by Trump and his supporters.

Those trying to kick Mastriano off the ballot say his actions triggered the rarely invoked Disqualification Clause in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which was enacted in the wake of the Civil War to keep former Confederates out of Congress and state governments.

The provision states in the relevant part: “No person shall … hold any office … under any state, who, having previously taken an oath … or as a member of any state legislature … any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

It was a HUGE mistake by Congressional Republicans to accept, even for one second, the characterization of the events of January 6, 2021 as an “insurrection” or even a “riot”.

I think this “insurrection” disqualification actually has some legs.

These are all test cases to keep Trump off the ballot in 2024.

Only in the mostly vacant minds of liberals. No.

So, where was this guy on Jan 6? In D.C. at the rally, or in PA?

“I think this “insurrection” disqualification actually has some legs.”

If you are correct, Trump would endorse Dr. Oz for senator.

By saying the insurrection DQ scenario "has legs", I certainly wasn't endorsing it, saying "they have a point", etc, etc.

There was no insurrection. Period. End of story.

But the other team is restless, and they may be getting ready to make their move.

They have a replacement plan for the state, and they may well have their first 1000 or so officials lined up. If a Federal Court rules that many Republicans are disqualified from office, and the military backs their play, the state could fall within days.

My point was, we don't have a countermove planned. Most people don't even want to think about it.

The GOP did not rise up and strike down the insurrection narrative on the spot. IN fact, may of their elected officials have referred, repeatedly, to the guided tour on January 6 as an "insurrection" or a "riot".

The price tag for their treason may turn out to be more than we can bear to pay.

Just wait until the GOP uses this tactic to keep DJT off the primary ballots. Remember, the Republican party NEVER wanted him to be nominee OR POTUS.

The bigger joke is the lack of response from the GOP. They should be doing the same to every rat who pushed the russian collusion hoax.

Jim Noble,

Well said, you write the truth.

The hyperbole about the January 6th protest event, from the democrats, Biden republicans, the DC establishment & media is nauseating.

I’m sick of it.

Mastriano never entered the building and left the area when the protest turned ugly.
