Their Opinion and Analysis shows cost money and don’t produce viewers.
No viewers equals no sponsors or sponsors that don’t have to pay much for the commercial time.
News readers don’t get paid as much as analyst or opinion talking heads.
Cut back to just news and cut cost maybe generate profits.

The problem is that many networks and newspapers no longer need viewers or readers to survive. Their billionaire owners use them to push their leftist ideology and don’t care if that business loses money. It’s a nice tax write-off.

What jumps out at me about the spinoff is that the Discovery people are in charge. WarnerMedia is legacy Hollywood with one of the deepest film catalogues in the business. Discovery TV is mostly reality and unscripted tv, the cheapest possible content shotgunned across streaming platforms in the hopes of catching a micro niche somewhere. I’m sure the new entity will pay lip service to maintaining high quality theatrical filmmaking and prestige tv (e.g. HBO), but personnel are policy and the junk tv crowd is running the show.
That said, the synergies for CNN are obvious. Discovery is home to the “Naked and Afraid” franchise. CNN’s ratings are in the tank, and it’s been a long time since anyone took it seriously as a news network. I can see the rebranding now: “Naked and Afraid of News.” Wolfie and the gang can strip down, or more likely will be replaced by young hotties who can be hired really cheaply to read off a teleprompter in the buff.
It’s all for ratings, right? The HR standards should be consistent across the company. If it is legitimate for a huge global conglomerate to demand that young actors perform nude to boost ratings and ticket sales in entertainment shows and movies, the news division can hardly expect to be held to a lesser standard. It’s late in the day for the grizzled newshounds of corporate media to discover the moral rot of the companies they work for, but maybe if the intimacy coordinators start moving into the newsrooms, a few of them will catch on. Of course if they object, they’ll be contemplating the situation in retirement.
They can start with hiring Tim Pool, Joe Rogan, Matt Taibbi and Jimmy Dore . . . Make sure to acknowledge that the news presenters are across the spectrum politically but have earned their positions by being honest about their personal beliefs. Straight news today isn’t about facts, it’s about trying hard to strive to include all beliefs without prejudicial judgment.
