Following Prince William’s comments about issues around current space flights, William Shatner responded to the royal’s concerns. The actor both justified his trip as well as to shut down what the Duke of Cambridge had to say.
“He’s a lovely, gentle, educated Englishman, but he’s got the wrong idea,” Shatner told Entertainment Tonight.
The star explained what he meant by noting that the “idea here is not to go, ‘Yeah, look at me. I’m in space.’” Instead, he said that “the prince is missing the point. The point is these are the baby steps to show people [that] it’s very practical. You can send somebody like me up into space.”
“We’ve got all the technology, the rockets, to send the things up there… You can build a base 250, 280 miles above the Earth and send that power down here, and they catch it, and they then use it, and it’s there. All it needs is… somebody as rich as Jeff Bezos [to say], ‘Let’s go up there.’”
Going a little deeper to explain that “the idea of getting industry up there” is “so that all those polluting industries, especially, for example, the industries that make electricity” end up “off of Earth.”
Although Shatner did agree with the royal when it comes to the fact that we should be putting work in on our own planet, he said, “So fix some of the stuff down here … But we can curl your hair and put lotion on your face at the same time.”

The wisdom and perspective that comes with age, versus the stupidity and knee-jerkiness of youth.
I’m no fan of Bezos et al., but Prince Wills should stay in his lane and keep his mouth. No one is asking him to fund their space flights. And, besides, it’s a fallacious argument to claim that the planet requires “saving” in the first place.
I found it ironic that Shatner came back from space saying we ought to quit killing the planet with global warming -— right after he just rode a very carbon heavy rocket ride just to be in space for a few minutes. LOL
The French got one thing right...
90 Y.O.? Yea he’s *earned* it.
Agreed. And the tea bag freakin’ kid can stuff it.
Prince William wasn’t so concerned about global warming, or climate change when during military exercises in 2008, he landed a Chinook helicopter in his then girlfriend Kate Middleton’s back yard. That little trick cost the RAF 30,000 pounds. It was the second time he had used a Chinook for personal visits. He needs to shut his pie hole, and get on with his Princely duties.
I think he’s trying to say build stations in orbit to collect energy - solar? - and beam it down to the surface. Of course you lose about 50% in transmission and how much will you collect in the first place? Anyway.... probably more than wind and solar on the planet surface.
Maybe the royals shouldn’t live in huge multi-room mansions burning up so much more electricity than we peasants.
Yep, sums it up nicely.
How exactly do we ‘beam it down’? (It’s not like, ‘Beam it down, Scotty’).
I believe profoundly in the Sun as a potential energy source for our electrical needs; but we’re a very long way from figuring out how to harness that energy in any large-scale and reliable way.
Via microwave or other high frequency link. As I said you lose a lot in transmission.
I could never stand that ham actor Shatner. Who even pays attention to that old fart? I certainly do not.
You and me both....
My stock in William went way down. He’s no better than his dad or his brother.
I’ve always thought the Queen and Prince Philip were the smartest in that family.
Once Queen Elizabeth is gone, I feel England will speed up the slide into oblivion.
